TF-51 due to fly across the Atlantic this summer ?

I picked story this up in a recently published UK aviation magazine today.

The TF-51 that's under restoration with the Fighter Rebuilders at Chino for the Fighter Collection will be ferried across the Atlantic by Ed Shipley.

The article goes on to say that the plan is to fly the TF-51 across with P-38 ~ Glacier Girl, in the company of two support aircraft.

No mention is made of B-17G ~ Liberty Belle joining the fighters .... yet !

There may be one other P-38 going as well.

received an e-mail from Stephen Grey a few days ago with some pics of the project... will have to ask permission to post the photos here, tough. - the message read:

There has been some pressure from my gang to paint it as a P-51D & as Birtciel's 55th FG aircraft. It seems, from some deep research by our group on colours, that the spinner & chequers were not in emerald green & primrose yellow as depicted on most of the restorations in the US depicting 55th FG, but actually were painted with the RAF colours of Dark Green & Yellow available at the time so we are doing it like that.

I saw the TF-51 at Chino last week - it looked really nice. It didn't look far off completion, although they're all really busy getting stuff ready for their airshow this weekend and fettling 'Glacier Girl' ready for her transatlantic trip.

I'll see if I can get a progress report when I'm there for the show at the weekend.

Flying across the ocean in a single engine aircraft. Remind me to put that on the list of things not to do. Is that even legal?

Well so far 2 mustangs, a corsair, 2 tigercats,a p-38, a wildcat,bearcat and a p-40 have all flown over to the UK

I guess I'm OK with the flight at this point, so long as the aircraft make it back over here to the US. I'd sure like to see Glacier Girl back here in San Antonio.

The Euro (or whatever they call it now) is VERY strong over in Europe right now, not good for us traveling..........but I bet you will see more airplanes leaving the US to Europe for a permanet stay in the near future.

Am I missing something? Since when is a single engine aircraft allowed to cross the ocean. I am pretty sure I remember reading something in the FAR AIM that they can't.

I don't think there is any FAR against ocean flight. 51s and other fighters were ferried over during the war and some since. Ward Wilkins and Ray Middleton took a T-28 and a Mustang across. It would be quite an adventure, but I certainly wouldn't do it in a 51. If you go down you lose the airplane and have a good chance of dying. I have thought about flying over a Great Lake, but it just seems like a chance one doesn't need to take. I flew a T-34 to the Bahamas, but that is another environment, and I was glad to see land.
