The Collings TA-4 Skyhawk is done in a semigloss. It offers the correct sheen as well as making cleanup much easier. We recently received a new product from Meguiars called Speed Glaze. Makes cleanup a snap. No more boot marks, hyd stains, and most of all greasy handprints. Doesn't damage the paint either. The link is to the recent WIX thread showing the jet.

The F-4 is flat paint, very authentic, unfortunately a bear to try and keep clean. The Speed Glaze we just got is certainly going to help but the paint is porous and prone to extreme oxidation.

There is a good urethane matte clear made by Sikkens which we painted on Frenesi and gave the flat look and was pretty easy to maintain. It was a good balance, because when we initially ordered the paint for her (back in 1991) they messed up the mixture and it dried glossy. I had a heart attack so we searched for a matte clear. It turns out the Sikkens matte clear is Mercedes Benz bumper paint, but it was really great and took a bit of work to strip when we removed it.

go with aircraft from the bare aluminum era of ww 2, you'll get the best of both worlds!!!

Jim, does the matte clear coat make touchups or spot repair hard to do ?

Not at all -- it is really easy to work with. The only issue is if you put it on significantly thicker it gives a slightly deeper look to the green we used. We also were able to seal all the hand lettering under it which was a good way to preserve the kill markings etc.

Here's a shot of 10 year old matte clear. It held up amazingly well. She's dirty in this shot as we just pulled the engine, but this gives the idea and also how it protects all the hand lettering.
