Jones Beach Airshow Warbirds

The Annual NY Airshow was held at Jones Beach this past weekend. I attended the show on Saturday, and here are a few pics of the warbird contingent.

Today I got out to Republic Airport and got to crawl around the inside of the Lanc. I'll post some of those shots when I get the chance.

Anyone know why the RB-25 nose art has been stripped off?

Nice shots, looks like it was a tough day for pictures and looking up with that haze.

Looks like some good birds showed up for that one.

I caught one of the news stations doing some of their weather broadcasts from Republic field this past Friday. (Fox 5)

Mmmm...I wasn't aware that they stripped off Miss Hap but then I didn't see the left side of the nose at all.

I just had to check but that side of the aircraft had "the Avirex Express" on the nose.

Thanks, Tim! The American Airpower Museum at Republic was hosting many of the airshow aircraft this past weekend. I spent much of the last week shooting at the airport and museum, but on Saturday night we had a special opportunity - the Airpower Musuem allowed about a dozen photographers to come out and shoot the aircraft at night, without the crowds and fences in the way. Those were some nice shots you got at the beach, Pete. I was there Sunday, and yes, the conditions were tough.

Here's one I shot on Saturday, from the old control tower at FRG. My favorite shot of the weekend (and quite possibly the shot of my life as a photographer!):

That has got to be one of the coolest shots I have ever seen. That 86 is a good looking airplane.

Thank you....I'm glad you like my shots. Coming from someone with your talent that means a lot to me! That F86 shot is great. I was at FRG Friday and looked up at that old tower and wondered who could I possibly bribe to let me hang out up there all day! I guess you shouldn't divulge your source! :lol:

As far as that night shoot, I wish the museum would have put the word out on it. I would have gladly coughed up some $$ to be on that line.

That tower is a nice spot, especially when 1/19 is active (The F-86 & A-10 were about the only ones to use it, most were on 14/32). My friend Fred and I do a lot of shooting around FRG and the museum, and allow them to use any of our photos for the museum, so they let us have some extra access.

Sorry you didn't hear about the night shoot - Fred worked that out with the museum, and we posted notices on Airliners.net, JetPhotos.net and our local spotter/photo site, NYCAviation.com. The next time we hold something like this (and there will likely be a next time) I'll be sure to post a notice here as well. There was no cost to the photographers, only the request that any photos include a credit to the museum.

Gary,

Those 2 were it I'm afraid. It was a very loose formation, with the -17 being on the inside of the circuit and the Lanc closer to the shoreline. That was ok with me since I really wanted to see the Lanc and was happy she was nice and close. Everyone made about 3 passes before heading home.

I did hear a comment on my scanner from the fighter lead. There were 3 fighters (2 P40's and the P51) call signs Fighter 1..2...3, "....if the B-17 doesn't join the formation, we will stay with the B-17 copy?"
Not sure what they were refering to.
