Thank you John,
From our shared emails I know how much
you valued your friendship with Gerry.
I know writing that wasn't easy.

I have had my wife's family here this weekend, & have been out of touch. I read in this morning's paper (in shock) about Jim Leroy's accident. I got on line to find out more only to learn of this terrible accident with the P-51's. I am numb! I usually am able to find something to say, but I am at a loss. I can only ask God to be with all affected by this.

I am just in shock. I was in Canada this weekend on business, and I got the phone call saying 2 -51's had impacted, then found out who was involved. I've tried to type this poor attempt at a rememberance so many time, hard to see the sscreen thru the tears on my face.

Gerry, I only met you a handful of times, but every time I saw you, you had a grin on your face. Know that you will be missed deeply, and know that you touched so many people's lives positively. You were such a gifted metalbender and mechanic, but unfailingly modest. I enjoyed the too-few times I was able to talk to you, and I'm heartbroken that we, the warbird community, have lost you.

Goddammmit I am so sick of losing the good ones.

It's like a baseball bat has just hit me in the stomach....

Gerry was a contributor to my newsletter from years ago....used to call him every month for 'dish' for the newsletter....really liked talking to the guy....finally met him some years ago, last time I saw him was at the Corsair Gatrhering at Stratford in '05 where I ALMOST got to ride in the Corsair with him....instead wound up in the B-25 photographing him and 2 other Corsairs with Mr. Allnutt....great flight....

The warbird movement has lost a first class ambassador...and one helluva nice person....

Blue skies and tailwinds, Gerry...

M

I just want to echo some of the nice things said about Gerry in previous posts. He was without a doubt one of the nicest, most talented people I've ever met. I was running the engines up in the B-24 when we saw the fireball and we knew right away that we had lost a truly special person. In Saturday's show, we were honored to be the lead plane in a missing man formation that was dedicated to him.

Godspeed Gerry. You are already missed.

Gary Austin
