How close is this to the P38 ammunition box? Any P38 builders out there?

Hi John... I would have thought that a P-80 ammo box might have had a lot of similarity to a P-38 nose ammo box, as at one point they were side-by-side on the production line. I'm just curious to know what the linkage is between a Republic P-84 and a Lockheed P-38.... if there is one, that would be really interesting news (I know very little about P-84's).

Cheers,
Richard

Richard,
Good question. My thoughts were based on a comment by the former owner of this part that it looked like a P38 ammo box. I also am thinking that the design engineers may have used an existing ammunition can as opposed to building a new one. Not a fact, just a supposition. I also think that if it is not EXACTLY like a P38 ammo can, it might be useful for making into one with the various restorations going on out there. I don't know anything about the P84/F84 series either but I'm almost sure this can doesn't fit the P47!

Martin,
Thanks for the great photos! The answer conclusively shown in vintage photos! What a great forum.
