Great shot (as always), Jack! 8)

FYI: BUFF is something you do to your car ... to SEA B-52 crew, that big black and green Dog-model beauty will always be "The BUF".

Mudge not criticizing, just inquisitive . Wondered if someone forgot the checklist or if there was an operational reason. For all I know they are just multi tasking, maybe there is a KC-135 just out of the picture, one guy is dropping bombs and the other guy is getting gas !

obviously you dont know vietnam war ... tankers WOULD not be giving fuel to bombers in a bomb run.. cmon bit silly ... and way to dangerous. Yet tankers did venture into NVN airspace to refuel damaged Thuds and Phantoms at very big risk to the crews....

KC-135 tankers had normally certain orbits in south china sea for buffs... since this photo cant tell whether it is Linebacker 1/2 era or a Arc light sortie over sotuh vietnam, i will go with it been daylight and arc light as that most common support BUFFs did.. it seems simple a refuelling door problem or missed in the process of refuelling.. but will say it is definetly very uncommon.. only photo ive ever seen in my many years of reading books ... it is common photo.

Sabredriver, I believe that I have a better than average grasp of aircraft ops during the Viet Nam war and a pretty good grasp of today's ops with a couple of aircraft of the period.

You obviously have no sense of humor and don't understand what the laughing emoticon means !

While the question regarding the refueling doors was real, the comment regarding bombs and refueling was not !!

I have spoken with current and former crews and it seems to be a 50/50 across the board for BUF or BUFF.
Great picture.
