Oh do we? Part of the responsibility of being a good American citizen is being educated and participate in our system of government. 90% of the electorate today is more interested in American Idol than what is really going on with the wars and with what kind of amazing power grabs are being made in the White House. Look at the people arrested for wearing anti-Bush shirts, look at the newly discovered White House manual to deal with protesters. Dig a little deeper and find out what other parts of the Constitiution and our right have been trampled in the name of fear of terrorism. In WWII, it was we have nothing to fear but fear itself. Now its, be afraid all the time and trust us. We have abdicated our responsibility for oversight of our government and we will be paying the price for a long time. The part of the public who doesn't really pay that much attention will continue to be swayed by fear tactics, and by ads like the new ones by Arri Fleischer which attach the attacks of 9/11 to the war in Iraq. Questioning what our government is doing is as patriotic as it gets – don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

My wife would suggest getting a pint of chocolate peanut butter ice cream, sitting down and watching a tear jerker and having a good cry.

You have to love her.

Hellcat, young lad. It's ok to feel that way. War sucks, but as long as we humans exist and have, it is a part of life. "My God is better than yours and I'll kill you for it." has been the root cause of wars forever and probably will remain so. Be happy that the tactics utilized now are not the same as the days of my father, your father, grandfather, etc. Those wars targeted innocent civilians in order to destroy infrastructure and morale of nations. Now, we try to target only the bad guys and reduce collateral losses. That makes some of these new weapons pretty beautiful in my eyes.

Now, your confusion over the technology of weapons systems and delivery systems. Do you look at a really sweet Ruger 357 revolver with a brass trigger guard and burl grips as ugly because it has the ability to kill? What about a beautiful Naval ship? Old Ironsides? Medieval armour? Appreciate the technology, the art and the design. Compartmentalize the fact that war was the root of all of these designs. You can do it! Otherwise, I can get you in touch with my wife who is a therapist and maybe she can help you.

Now, about them silicone jugs? Weapons or no? Could poke an eye out you know. 8)

Since the title of your post is "Confusing Day", I just wanted to let you know I can see how this could be very confusing, you watch a show about war, take a trip to a foreign country, and wake up one day and realize you are French. I would be confused as well. :D

Anyway, I look at a P-51 mustang, ... :D .... I love the look, always have, but today, I think I'll have to look at something else, maybe a hike in the mountains. Clear my mind. Actually maybe if I hike to the top and in the distance I hear a rolls royce engine and out of the blue my be-loved mustang flys over me and tips the wings, says hi, .... :D ... maybe I'll see something else other than the ugliness of war in my mind.

Someone cheer me up ...

I'll never, ever, ever vote for war. War is death and distruction, nothing ever good comes from war. It's really that simple. We all know that. War is a cowards way of solving problems.

I have participated in war and killed enemies, other human beings by my own hand -- and it is certainly a terrible, terrible thing. There is nothing glorious about it, IMHO.

But...I can't say it any better than this quote. There ARE reasons to go to war and fight even if you feel that it is a horrible thing:

Quote:
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice – a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice – is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other.

John Stuart Mill, April 1862
English economist & philosopher (1806 - 1873)

Are you really saying that if another country or entity were trying to invade ours or destroy our way of life, that you would not fight for it?

I'm not going to get into the sociopolitical dust-up here.

I love the piston engine warbirds because of their beautiful design, their sound, and their agility.

Jets don't hold that fascination for me. Don't know why.

Mudge the selective

Yeah...yeah...I've just insulted the jet fans. (Not Jet fans, jet fans. :D )

You know, for a number of years I felt the same way about Jets. But I have really been giving a lot of consideration to getting a T33. Ever since I saw a picture on here of a polished T33 with tip tanks, I have been having these bad thoughts. Therapy or a T33? Maybe both.

You'd dig flying it, just gas (lots) 'n go and very little maintenance. I'd be happy to swap a T-33 ride for a Skyraider sortie to facilitate your jet wanderings and you can put that money for the shrink towards oil, fuel or spark plugs for your Skyraider and/or booze and cigarettes. I'll be at the Waukegan Air Show (north side of Chicago) Sept 8th (it's only one day). They'll provide fuel. PM me if you're interested.

Edited for comedic jocularity.
