Jack, your pictures?

Sun Sep 16, 2007 12:56 am

Hey Jack,

I'm love the pictures that you post, but I gotta ask, how did you come across all of your images? Where'd you get them all?

It's probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it in past posts.

Keep postin' em. We all love them.

Cheers,

David

I've concentrated my "photo collecting" to 8th AF fighters, particularly the 4th FG, but I think Jack's (and Martin Kyburz, aka "Swiss Mustangs" - another prolific collector) collection came about basically the same way - US National Archives, eBay, trading with other collectors, copying or buying original collections ...

Jack's and Martin's collections differs from mine in that they have original prints in large part - I've been happy to acquire high-quality copies for my purposes (artwork reference). That has helped me in dealing with some collectors (like Jack and others) in that there's no "threat" to their originals. Jack, for one, sells copies on eBay.

One guy I know is the "Jack Cook" of 4th FG original photos ... like Jack, he has had personal relationships with the original pilots and ground crewmen (an untapped source with many WWII groups), and I helped him pay to scan and put a LOT of his collection on disc so I could have dupe discs. Win-win.

I can't speak for Jack or Martin, but if you're like them and concentrate your efforts on beating the bushes for photos for as long as they have, you'll have an amazing collection yourself! 8)

The Archives is the primary source sort of like King Solomons mines.
I've know 100s of vets though and being the historian of the 44th FS I've amassed about 2000 photos of just that squadron. Ebay, garage sales and friends with similar interests that help each other out is the coolest way though. I've got photos used in at least 50-60 books. My collect took a hard hit when our house burned last April :( but I recovered some originals, quite a few disks and luckily a friend had a exteral hard drive of mine full of photos. I also have 3 photo bucket accounts that are full. A lot of people also have been sending me photos via mail 8) and email which is good (and also sometimes not so good).
Hope that answers your Q.

Speaking of fire, I keep all my irreplaceble photos/items in a fire proof gun safe.

It may not prevent damage but hopefully destruction.

What do the rest of you do?

All I can say is that you have nice collection :P Sad to hear about fire at your house :(
