True story. THe F-86 and Mig 15 were placed against eachother in an air demonstration at some airshow in Russia. The F-86 waxes the tail of the Mig everytime. What do the Russian newspapers say the next day? "Mig 15 places second in air demonstration while American fighter comes in second to last."

True story? Any evidence? Date? Quotes from the 'Russian Newspaper' you refer to? Personally it sounds like a total fabrication to me, but I'd be happy to be proved wrong if you can come up with a shred of evidence to support your claim.

Great. Now the US Govt. will probably add the T-38 to the list of planes (eg. F-14) from which they won't sell surplus parts.

I would be willing to bet Pravda could have cooked up something like this. They were notorious for simply lying when then truth couldn't be bent enough to serve them. Considering the Russian peolpe told jokes like this to point out how useless reading Pravda was, it could well be apocryphal.

From a non-pilot point of view of course, it seems to me the fastest way to getting yourself killed in a fight would be arrogance.

Remember the Skyraider that shot down the Migs?

My point exactly, but much more succinctly stated! I wouldn't despise that plane no matter what it looks like. After a some got shot down convincingly, I'd start to breath a little easier.

1) Yep, looks like a 2-tail F-5 to me.

2) I have 'killed' a surprising number of F-15s and F-16s while playing aggressor in the AT-38. They shot me down far more times, true, but you'd be surprised what a good pilot in an average machine can do.

The video looks more like a movie trailer for "Hot Shots Pt. 3"!

What gets me is that they can cobble together this thing but can't make spares for their Tomcats?

What next for them, indoor plumbing?

If they can pull off designing a real jet (ok, even if it's a copy) then I think it's totally possible that they could eventually build parts for the F-14s - especially since they seem to have close ties with the Russians - who we KNOW have been able to reverse engineer stuff.

Years ago, during the cold war with Russia, when the size of our defense budget was a major concern, someone, perhaps Robin Williams, suggested we hire the Isrealis to fight our wars, at cost plus 20%. I have actually flown with a current Isreali fighter pilot in my plane who wanted to get checked out in a Spitfire. He had a deep hatred for the Iraqis, and a great love for American air to air missles. He had a couple of MIG kills in a previous war. I'll take the Isrealis and give 8 points against Iran. I think they'd deal with Iran like the great Longhorns (ok, near great) just did the Bird Nerds.

ryan makes a very valid point. not only that....... 28 years of trade embargo has pushed the iranians to cultivate their own technology. the new fighter, torpedos, etc.
