Am I dreaming, or didn't Conrad launch a campaign to "save" the show when the network announced that it wouldn't be renewed?

The show was in jeopardy even before that last season. That's why they tried to sex it up with "Pappy's Lambs". (Worked for me. :D )

I'm sure I remember seeing him on the Merv Griffin show or something talking about this.

I was told by one of the series Corsair pilots that when word came that the show was going to be canceled, Conrad and Boyington went to see the network exec. When told that the show was too violent and warmongering, Conrad launched at the "Little Lord Fauntleroy" exec and scattered some of his teeth all over the table. He hasn't been doing much acting since. Can't verify if this is true, just what I was told.

I doubt it. He's worked steadily for years.

BTW has a kid I ate up every second of that show. Has an
adult i'll still watch it for the a/c but the magic is gone :?

As far as a "save the show" campaign....

An old TV guide article done during the show's last year talks about Conrad schmoozing with affiliate managers during the annual affiliates convention. He's pick out managers from stations in the south & west (where the series was popular) and entertain them ...and then ask them to go to the network bigshots and tell them you want the show to continue.
It was one of the reasons the show was picked uyp for its final season.

BTW: While he was filming "Black Sheep" he was going through a divorce and was living in a huge RV at an FBO at Van Nuys while he was learning to fly. My brother-in -law rented planes from them and we went up to Oxnard in a 182, so I saw the RV and heard the story for myself.
And there was a nice autographed photo of Conrad on the wall.

Real song Phil...it's actually the chorus part of the Yale "a capella" crooners
"Whiffenpoof Song"...the final song they sing in the evening since 1909.
The chorus is actually a derivation or parody of lines in a Rudyard Kipling poem,
"Gentlemen Rankers"..a piece of history in its own right..google it..

The chorus was also in the Peck movie, "12 O'clock High"

I've wondered if VMF 214 ever really sang this song in their bar, or referred
to the Kipling chorus in their escapades in the bar?

HA - I loved this show - I was pretty young and never would have caught the "belle" footage but as the song says, "Thats entertainment!"

Can you remember the Japanese counterpart to "Pappy" - Meatball as I recall? Oh boy - these were a bit far fetched but still a lot of fun to watch.

Don't you wish we'd have been around when the scrap yards were full of these planes for sale :?
