It was a small scale P-38 that Dave Morss was testflying for someone. I have read a story about it, possibly on Dave's Website. I'll see if I can find the info. There is also a good story about the events surrounding that Lancair racing at Reno that year that I will post when I have a little bit longer to type it out.

I remember seeing something about a P-38 replica a few years back. If I'm remembering correctly the builders last name was Treadwell.
Edit: I couldn't find anything on the first replica but I did turn up some info on a new plane in the works.

I saw a P-38 replica quite a few years ago at the Halfmoon Bay airshow. As it flew high over I was standing next to a running jet, so that's all I could hear. But I was excited at the idea of seeing my first flying P-38. I was about 16 at the time. Imagine my disappointment as I ran over to watch it taxi in and it never got big enough. It was still a cool airplane though and warranted its fair share of photos. I have them some place, only they are film, and I don't have a scanner. Might be the same airplane in the video though. I had to wait until this last summer to finally see a real P-38 in the air.

No, that was from the VIOLENT shaking that the prop caused when it broke. It basically destroyed the front of that aircraft. I remember Dave saying the engine was pretty much just laying in the bottom of the cowl. It was that close to just departing the aircraft. When they showed up with that airplane, the plan was to run it in the unlimited class. This was a few years before RARA came out with the sport class at Reno. During pilot / aircraft qualifications for the event, the unlimited class safety head was not impressed with that airplane. He was not going to let them run. After Dave got what was left of that aircraft back on the ground, he changed his mind. He reportedly walked up to Dave and basically said he was wrong in thinking they didn't belong, and gave the team their Unlimited race ticket right there. Dave post from time to time on antother forum. I'll see if I can get him over here on this thread.

the plane has been around for a number of years (over 10). if memory serves, it was a 3/4 scale P-38 that was built and based at Livermore, CA. Someone mentioned Dave Morss. I think he did do some test flying for them, but if it's mentioned on his site (www.davemorss.com), it's only a passing reference.

Note the tubing sticking up out of the innards. Had to have shut off the fuel or something would have started burning.

Even cleared the active. Sierra Hotel emergency flying there.

Yes the scale P-38 was built in Livermore. It has since been sold as I recall. The gentleman who built it is working on a new project. A scale flying boat. Don't ask which one, I don't remember.
