Judy Pay P40F merlin Power - photos current status -Fly soon

Hi all

Thanks to Tony Andrews from the UK who was at Tyabb last week and took the attached photos we can now get a good idea of the current state of what will be the worlds only flying P40F with Merlin Power.

It was thought that the first flight was imanent but from these shots I would imagine that 3-4 months is more realistic as all the details are finished - anyway whenever it does happen it will be worthwhile.

Meanwhile I am trying to get to Scone to see Cpl Pays P40 which is about to fly in 3 Sqn RAAF Desert colors and is due to fly any day. P40s rule here at present and added to Murray Griffiths example we will soon have 3 airworthy examples - WOW!!

Thanks for the update. It's always great to see in progress photos, especially such a rare variant.

Is that a CJ-6 engine cowl in the foreground of a few of the shots?

In the photos of Judy Pay's P-40F restoration, the Merlin engine looks to me like it's shorter in length than the typical Allison. Is the Merlin actually shorter, or are my eyes playing tricks on me again.

Hi gang!. My first post on this site!
I have got to ask about this P40.... A Merlin powered one?. I've been into old un-usual aircraft for years but I've missed this one. I thought they were all Alison powered?.
If there is a practical reason for this, i.e. can't get hold of a suitable Alison please except my humble appologies I did not mean to cause offence!.

Actually the F models were originally Merlin powered. Scott has a nice summary of the P-40 models over on the WRG. Here is the page...

I think to some extent the lenghth of the Merlin Vs the Allison is a illusion created by the photo and the fact that the cowling is silver which makes it look deeper and shorter but I will check for you when I am next there.

Thanks for the info Mike, you learn something new every day!.
I appologized because I didn't want to appear an "Arm chair critic", Merlin, Alison or PT6 I'm glad somebody is spending thier money and time getting them airborne!.
She looks beutiful too!!

I received a nice email from Judy this evening. She said the airplane still has a ways to go. They are looking for the proper cowlings. I've got no doubt that build up a set for the F will be spendy if they can't find a set.
Hopefully by this summer...............

Hi Jack - yes the cowlings look a little weird but the aircraft is great and I wouldn't imagine it is that far away given it's current state but as you say it needs a lot of the details finished.
