Warbird Information Exchange

I have a number of old Canon cameras. One from the early 50's, another a AE1. My only digital is a small 2MP Nikon.

Looking for a SLR Digital that is within the Budget of this old timer.

While I would like the Nikon D80 that goes well over $1,000 it is out of the question.

Found an Olympus E410 with a 2 lens kit and is a 10MP. The price in Sam's Club is $699 which is on or close to my limit.

The Canon EOS Rebel XT1 is $729 with a 18-55mm lens.

1) Any comments on these or any cameras and 2) While I am familiar with 42nd St. since I worked in NYC years back, how about some other good on line suppliers.

Any comments and/or help will be greatly appreciated.

I just picked up a Rebel Xti from Best Buy on sale for $600 after taxes, so look around for the deals before you buy. So far I am very happy I made the jump to digital!

Retiring the Kodak X-15 already?

I have a Canon 30D and am quite happy with it, although this might be just out of your price range. I know that a lot of other WIXers are happy with their EOS Rebels.

My first DSLR was an EOS Rebel XT a couple of years ago. I was pleased with it, but I moved up to a 30D as soon as I could.

Personally, I would advise you to buy the Canon Rebel versus the Olympus, even if the price is a little bit higher.

DO NOT buy the camera with the 18-55mm lens. Try to see if within your budget limitations, you could upgrade to the same camera but with at least the EFS 17-85mm US lens.

When I purchased mine, the difference in price between the 18-55 and the 17-75 was probably around $150 or so.

This lens is great for close up shots (not for air to air or ground to air though) and will also give you a very good detail.

Sorry to say this, but if you buy a camera with two lenses for $699, that's what you will be getting quality-wise. Canon has really good lenses, but they tend to come up on the high dollar end; in my personal experience, well worth the investment.

Since the Canon 40D is now up for sale, I would guess a drop in price on the 30Ds is going to happen soon (if it has not already taken place) and this would put you closer to getting a really good, solid and really nice camera.
