So is the D40 a good camera? I have to replace my D50 that was taken from my car.

Mustang I have a D40 and I am very happy with it, the photos in the post below were shot with a D40. But you might want another lens, the 18-55mm that comes with it is good for tanks and airplanes on the ground but not airplanes in flight. The people here will have good suggestions as to the best lens for that.


"I saw these at Bovington Dialup beware 125 pics" all these were shot with a D40, not a D40x which costs a little more.....

The D40 and D40x are good cameras, but you just have to keep in mind that you will need AF-S lenses. If you upgrade to the D80, you can use just AF lenses and save a lot of money when you need to buy lenses later.

I just ordered a D80, and hope to have it by Monday.
I got a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor Lens.
That should cover the air shots as well as the closeup ones.

You don't want to be switching lens at the airshow with all the dust around anyway. One lens should do it. Get a D80 if you can. I tried out a D80 and a D50, I think you will like the D80.

Blue, you wil quickly find that isn't enough lens for you. 200 mm Is pretty good for a starter, but you'll outgrow it when you compare your shots to Eric's and the like. Shoot for the moon! get a 500!

Gee Mustangdriver...I would get another 75-300mm lens. Thats the one I want for my D80.

BTW.......Nikon is the way to go. :D :twisted:

It states that we will have airplane openings ... among other activities.

Have no idea yet as to which planes ... but I surely will bring my digital along.

Seems like the consensus leans t'wards the D80. Any recommendations as to which supplier to get it from? I've noticed a number of "bundled kits" on the internet, but kinda leery of shooting a couple of grand into the dark, so to speak... Drop me a PM, if you would on that item. :wink:

Another question about the D80 - can you use Nikon A1 lenses with it? Hate to put 10 some-odd lenses out to pasture (bad enough the F3, FE and FE2 are headed that way, along with the already retired Rolleiflex...).

Isn't the A1 a Canon? Or should I be reading AI as in the Nikon lens type type. If you are talking AI then I believe AI series is the earliest series of lens that you can place on your newer model F mount cameras without having to modify them. It would be in full manual mode. Once you hit Nikon AF series I think most from then on will allow you full automatic functions.

I bought mine from Beach Camera it was 539.00 with lens, probably cheaper now. they had a good price, fast shipping and free shipping
