Emergency canopy release.
The button is a release to slid it open.

the button allows the canopy to roll back...the red is actually an arm that pops out and is coupled to the emergency canopy jettison located in the cockpit. It releases the canopy from the air frame including the rearmost latch so you can lift off the canopy or jettison it in flight.
