I'm sorry you've decided to zero in on the negatives - it would be good to have some input from a RF-4c person on the forum, but you've chosen not to.

For the record, I also think it's a pity you've not had more L-29 feedback (as I said, above) - it would be interesting. Sometimes that's just the way it falls.

I did actually say 'excellent post' for what was a good point you made, and I responded to that. The response was (IMHO) a childish 'blank stare'.

Feel free to turn up to a discussion board and offer 'blank stares' but it's going to get dull quickly.

Forums drift off topic; that's just how they are. No one person's ego or knowledge or opinions drive the forum either - feel free to convince - the opportunity's there.

This is the warbirds information exchange; not a private forum for ex-military pilots - as a result some elites have to put up with intrusion by others - when they play nicely, it can be very interesting. We would be interested in your experience, if you want to share; hence a couple of my questions you've decided to ignore - your call.

Generally I've better things to do than argue the toss; but you mentioned the 'pistols', I responded with what was intended to be a joke about 'sabres' you then decided to be rude about Australia. As a rule, I'd expect to get a mouthful if I were rude here about the USA - so I don't. Respect's earned and works both ways - maybe 'you'll get it' sometime.

this forum is fascinating. I post something about wanting an L-29 and immediately an argument about various things starts. Then the rude comments start to fly.
A lot fo you guys need to read Razors Edge by Maughm. there is a single line in that book "......YOU JUST DON'T GET IT"
only one of you hit on the real problem with Reno. THe course has changed too much over the years due to the fact that the land buffer has been slowly sold off. Eventually Reno will not exist as the course will look more like a Q tip than an oval.
To say I am arrogant is at best unbelievable. I do know my limitations. I quit being involved in racing after my friend Rick died. That was it for me. I then decided to get in to the ops side to MAKE IT SAFER FOR EVERYONE. Its not arrogance its love of a sport and aviation in general that brought me back.
...oh and why yes the RF4-C was unarmed. our motto was "alone--unarmed--and not afraid" we modified it to say "...well 2 out of 3 anyway" funny how you fly in low and just take pre-strike assessment photos ...then when you go back for the post assessment photos EVERYONE is shooting at you with everything including sling shots...what got them so riled up...I'm just taking pictures.
anyway I think this forum has its fair share of just wanna bes with chips on their shoulders.
Ill pop in from time to time for the humor factor and wish you all good luck
oh and take the air race fight to the air race forum --- i was looking for feed back on those pilots who have lived with an L-29.......

Bill, the fastest jet (a T-33) qualified at over 525mph this year, several others were at over the 500 mark. My concerns are based on a combination of the speeds, the sight of the 'gaggle' coming off the last turn of the first lap in the Thurdsay Gold heat this year, with several aircraft either clearly out of or only under marginal control whilst pointing directly at the public areas, and the length of the debris field from the accident.

Mike, that is exactly what I was thinking. The unlimiteds are usually spread out by the time they get to pylon 8 on the first lap. In the Thurs heat race, the jets looked like a sprint car field coming down the valley. We thought that Pips Squeak and the L-29 had touched wings from our vantage point, then the L-29 driver decides he's had enough and maydayed out, then Brad went in . It was just alot of things combined that made it sketchy to me. Could an unlimited crash into the pits? Of course. I think the likelyhood of that happening vs the likelyhood of the jets doing it is low. Mike Houghton said at the awards banquet that the unlimited are taxing the current course to the limit, and the jets have exceeded that limit. I hope I didn't come off as a jet hater, as I am not. If the course can be altered, and saftey improved for the pilots and the crowd, I'd love to see them back. I think there are a few things RARA could do in reguards to how they lay out the pit / spectator area too, but that's a subject for another time.

I'm with you on exposing the younger group to a mix of warbirds. I heard the comment at Lone Star in rebuttal to someones less than educated opinion that "..we need to start attracting the jetheads to get some young blood in warbirds."

To quote a new LS member who rode down with his dad with me one Sat. work day... "man, this is WAY more interesting than I expected it to be." Nonstop questions all the way home. He did his daddy proud IMHO.


n5151ts... what the heck, go buy a jet warbird.
Being involved with a warbird museum and this site has given me an admittedly much broader interest. NOthing is 'an old beater to put on a pole.' Somebody flew it somewhere and probably liked it.

Glad to hear it. I was hoping you had thicker skin. :wink:

And I wasn't knocking you for being a Recon Rhino driver, god knows every part of the machine is important to get the job done. I was merely pointing the RF-4's unarmed factor when you referenced it to your "pistol" scenario.

Back to the topic. Have you considered other more historic domestic types?

I apologize if I came across as accusing others of running me off. Admittedly I was tired with a 'tude and got hypocritical. I wasn't trying to offend. Choosing one's time to post does seem like the best course.

I didn't read it that way, so no harm done. Your points were all good, and as you say, if we want warbirds to prosper we need to get now young blood involved; the good news is generally, once trying it they seem to like it. It's getting them to try it!
