This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

That was back in the day when we were throwing around the idea of a WIXer aircraft. Something that is a long range goal for the forum.

Long Range?... Aye Captain!!

A wonderous beastie...plenty of room for the WIX'ers riding to the shows,
a coupla onboard bars, FF's spares and parts distribution shop, "Miss
Trixies Dungeon of Dee-Lite", and carry an L-5 or two for "beer runs" and
recon of the ..'er..umm... local wildlife!! Not to mention "Parrothead-runs"
to the Keys when the "whitestuff" sets in... AHHHH..life is GOOOOD.....

Yes, I would prefer a few P-6M's..but they're short on stock right now...
I'll settle for a Mermaid in me stocking this Christmas....Pleeeeezzz???

Progress

Has anybody located a lawyer they don't want to shoot and think would help us pro bono, or for a share of the aircraft?

Has anybody started the corporation or filed for 501C3 status? These are pretty easy, inexpensive steps to do. Can we do a poll to see who would be interested in doing this?

Also, can we discuss without getting the thread shut down which airframe would be appropriate? I am definitely down for a Caribou, as it is not a commonly seen thing in the circuit, would be useful for recoveries, has the wonderful P&W R2000 for power, and there is a stash of them nearby available for sale... Anybody want me to do a recon?

Sat Dec 11, 2004 12:18 pm

No wthat could be an interesting WIX bird.

As for progress, this idea has been batted around for a coulple of years now in one form or another. I've looked into 501c status for the forum/group but there were some negatives to it plus $500 or so in fees. However, forming of a non-profit could still be done as a new entity.

The biggest problem is one of distance, there has not been sufficient interest to date to generate the revenue to acquire an aircraft mainly because the distance that seperates us all. Where would the plane go? is the big one. Feel free to discuss this subject since I believe eventually we will have the right group of people at the right time to tackle this project

Organization Day At Geneseo

Sat Dec 11, 2004 1:47 pm

Well, we've got plenty of time before Geneseo next year, and if people are serious about this, and want to own a piece of a company that owns a Caribou or DC3 or something, I think we could probably iron out the problems of it within a few months. How about putting together a provisional group and then advertising? 2500 people is not a difficult number to get together, but you might open the ranks up if you allow corporate owners/sponsorships, since this might be a way of some owners to indemnify themselves. I'll put a Ben down for a provisional group, as long as we can come up with a reasonable set of costs, etc. The $500 figure comes up quite often as far as 501C3, but we can do it ourselves for much less than that.

Hey,
There's a rumor in the New England area of a few guys getting together to buy a Dakota to sell time in to anyone who wanted to get typed in the aircraft. With the amount of available pilots/maint/money people available it sounds like a great idea. The toughest thing around here is the place to put one.

lets see....

Mon Dec 13, 2004 2:15 pm

I think a Dakota would make a good aircraft because it's easy to fly, several people can ride it at one time, parts aren't too difficult to come by, and the price could be fairly reasonable.

However, with that in mind, I would be even more in favor of a C-46 Commando, because they are much less visible on the warbird circuit (only a couple I can think of that make the rounds), yet there are still several airworthy examples out there to choose from. Plus, you get the added benefit of two 2000hp radials (instead of 1200hp on the Dakota) to really make some nice noise with. Plus, I think it's just a darn cool plane to look at (for a transport, that is!).

Ideally, I would prefer a C-121 Constellation, but that might be a bit more aircraft than the group could handle (needing a three man crew, four huge engines, parts are more of a rarity, operating cost, etc., etc.).

As for where to keep the aircraft, geographically it could probably be stored in an area closest to the majority of the people interested in investing in it...OR in an area where preservation, storage, maintenance can most easily be accomplished (and where enough nearby WIXers live with mechanical experience, etc.).

Then we would want to take the aircraft on a summer touring circuit, getting on board with airshows so as many WIXers as possible could visit/ride the aircraft. Of course, this would require one or two dedicated crews to fly the summer circuit to the airshows, but I bet we could round up a few semi-retired pilots among the ranks who'd love to fly the plane around for a couple of weeks. Or instead of a summer circuit, the plane could just visit the largest regional warbird airshows (Thunder Over Michigan, CAF Airsho, etc.).

Just a couple of ideas for the fire...

While a C-46 or C-47 would be very practical ( ,if I can use that word with warbird in the same sentence) I'd love to see a Harpoon or a PBY, but they would require a ton of work and money to get started let along operate.

But I have a thing for Blue A/C with round engines. 8)

Back on topic, we've had this discussion before... My vote from a cost standpoint was an L-5. But if we can make the Syndicate work, a C-46 ot C-47 may be possible.

A Big wet Bird would be nice

Tue Dec 14, 2004 11:30 pm

'Tis always good to get wet once in a while(Is the Mars for sale?!)! As for the Toidy Point Buck, DJ, I was afraid that some people just wouldn't have a clue what this backwards Downeastah was talking about. Of course, I suppose that wouldn't be any different then Normal

anything long range and large that can make around the world tours, and joyflights as well during them, so the members of WIX can see all the hard to get to museums and collections etc has got to be a certainty for my vote.

despite that I think that a nice easily maintained aircraft capable of 3 or 4 minimum passengers with sufficient range to promote the syndicate at various airshows ( more members might equal more aircraft ) and a good spares availability would be the best starting point so, a C47 does look like a good first bet.
