I had something really off topic to write about and I felt really out of place with this one.

My Crayfish just molted!

My buddy, Melville is his name, is looking all naked with his old shell sitting next to him. He is much smaller than he was yesterday, a little darker too. This is the first time he has done this since we became his caretakers. Shannon and I were anxiously waiting for this since it had not happened in a year. He is now over 5 years old and hopefully is very happy in his tank with a diet of frozen peas and an occaisonal piece of dry catfood. At first sight I thought he was dead, but he kicked his feet while sitting on his back. No doubt tired from the trip out of his exoskeleton, he was just resting. We cannot have any pets in our apartment, but he is in a small tank and is about the length of a typical pen. He was a class project for Shannons neice a while ago and is still going strong. We are his retirement home. He kills me! Shannon is allergic to shellfish so he may kill her too.

The word on the crayfish forum is that he will eat the old shell to harden his new one. Shannons brother used to take it away from him. We will see.

I called Shannon at work a few minutes ago, to tell her we have twins!
She said, "dont touch him and I will be home right away!"

That might win the award as the most off-topic of all Off Topics. We used to dig em up as kids in Houston. They are tasty with the right crab boil. I never tried to pet one or take it for a walk, though, and the proper Latin name is crawdad, it least it is in Texas.

When Shannon changes the water in his tank, about every 2 or 3 weeks he comes in to hang out with me in his temporary bucket.

The funniest part of the whole thing,

When it comes time to change him, we get out a ty-wrap and hang it in front of him, he grabs on and gets lifted out, placing him into the bucket. Its been tough to get him to grab on for the ride back. He gets poured back in when he is stubborn.

BTW,
He has not touched his old shell as of yet, if you were wondering.

Alright,
The suspense was killing us, but he did it today.
We came home and he had a chunk of his old shell in his claws and was eating it.

Cannibal crayfish.

Cool pet Kenny.

Ah yes,

Kind of sounds like this should go in that "dumbest thing" topic on this page.

When I was younger, I had some 13 aquariums and terrariums set up with exotic reptiles and amphibians. I also had a few tanks with fish in them, and while camping on the coast one time, I caught a bunch of baby crawdads, that I thought would look cool in my fish tanks.

Unfortunately, due to them being cold water critters, and my tanks being heated for the tropical fish, these here crawdads didn't take kindly to being dropped into the hot tanks. To say the least, by the next morning, I had the "March of the Crawdads", heading down my parents stairs (carpeted) and heading throughout our house, living room, kitchen, you get the idea. To say the least, the dozen or so I was unable to locate, persihed in dustballs under furniture, stinking up the house to no end. Yes, unfortunate for these critters, and one stupid idea!

You yankees never get it right. It's a crawfish. 8)
