I spotted a picture in the Saturday Ottawa Paper of a CF101 Voodoo mounted inside the new War Museum due to open next May 2005. It appeared to be the former Lindsay Air Park Voodoo..CN 101002? any locals lads have any news on this Voodoo..I photographed the Voodoo last June and she was abit rough around the edges..maybe she got some TLC..new paint?

One other Voodoo news ..the CWHM Hamilton Museum Voodoo (former CFB Uplands) looks excellent now in new paint..looks like her furture is good for quite a while...

The rumour was she was going to the Diefenbunker, but the new museum on LeBreton Flats is a much better option. Have you heard when it is supposed to open?

Yes it is a better home for this aircraft being undercover and all..

I think the paper said that it is due to open next May...I figure they will be able to display their Spitfire with both wings attached...hopefully :)..I think she is quite an early mk.

Yes, it is a Mk IIB. The following is from the Canada Aviation Museum's webpage...

http://www.aviation.technomuses.ca/coll ... kIIB.shtml

...and indicates it is the only surviving "presentation" Spitfire, which means it was used for public displays an encouraging the public to buy war bonds, etc...

Museum Example
Registration #: P8332 (RAF)
Manufacturer: Supermarine Division, Vickers Armstrong Ltd., Great Britain
Manufacture Date: 1941
Construction #: CBAF 711
Aquisition Date: 1968
Provenance: Transfer from CAF
The Museum Spitfire IIB was built in 1941. It flew with the RAF before being damaged and repaired. Transferred to the RCAF, it was brought to Canada in May 1942, where it was flown and displayed. It remained on strength after the war entering the RCAF’s Museum in 1964. The Museum Mk. II is the only surviving “presentation” Spitfire. It was named Soebang (N.E.I.) after the Netherlands East Indies State which paid for it. By 1968 it had been transferred to the Museum.

Mike

Is the ex-Upland CF-100 still MIA, or is it going to the War Museum too?

The Uplands CF100 was still stored behind the Aviation Museum this summer..I have heard rumours that she was to be displayed infront of the avaition museum but going into the war museum might not be a bad idea..no many of the CF100's are kept undercover...

Catherine and I went to Parliament Hill last night to enjoy the lights. We drove by the front of the new War Museum and got a decent look at the former Lindsay Voodoo behind the large glass panel front of the museum.
It appears to be pole mounted indoors in much the same orientation that the Voodoo at Uplands was. It looks like the canopy had been masked so perhaps a repaint is under way, or is just being completed. The tail appeared to be nice and shiny.

I am looking forward to seeing the museum open. It looks like the area they have for displays is much better than the old museum.

Regards,

Mike

Funny thing is we did the same thing on Saturday nite...it does look quite impressive site at night behind the glass...I got the dirty look for Joan when I almost smacked the curb trying to drive and look at the Voodoo at the same time...

That's funny Andrew.... I had a similar experience last December going back and forth down the parkway... the museum looks so cool under construction, especially at night when it's snowing with all of the lights illuminating it.... rather like a huge concrete battleship in the icy seas! Can't wait for it to be finished, and open to the public.

Cheers,
Richard

I think there was a Kiowa or Twin Huey in the old museum, so I imagine it will transfer to the new museum.

I also noted the tank that was on display in front of the armoury (next door to city hall) and the tanks that were in front of the old museum are no longer there. Also there are a number of pieces of armour in Vimy House (the War Musuem annex just south of Lebretton Flats the site of the new museum), so there is no doubt will will see some army stuff displayed as well.

I hope to see the Halifax nose art some time, but I have heard nothing of any plans to display those.

Regards,

Mike

When I was in Ottawa in late October, I saw a presentation by Joe Gertz who is in charge of the War museum.
It is set to open next May to co-incide with the 60th aniversary of the end of the war in Europe. The plans are amazing for what they are doing. There will be galleries for certain time periods, WW1. WW2 , Cold War Peacekeeping etc.The WWI Gallery will recreate a section of the Western Front in a most realistic fashion. A Nieuport 17 and Barker's Snipe will be displayed there.
The Spitfire will be in the WWII gallery. The other plane noted in the plans will be a CF 5 in the Cold War section. Obviously the galleries will include tanks , guns in diorama settings. Where the F101 is located is the open storage area for all larger items, (most of the collection from Vimy House). All of the collection will be on display.
The collection of RCAF Bomber nose art will also be on display for the first time. It will be all displayed on a wall inside the museum.
The museum has a number of unique features including a grass roof as well as design features inspired by the post First war Western front ,as well as the German Atlantic Wall. To complete view the entire museum , will take over 6 hours. There are also plans to run and operate tanks and vehicles , which will provide even more interest.
A world class facility!.

That was what I was thinking. How about the morning at the Aviation Museum's open house, then the afternoon at the War Museum.

Anyone interested?
