Would have loved to be out there....beautiful weather for beating up the field a bit.... Unfortunately the wife fell and got pretty banged up Friday morning so I had the boys all day. The oldest likes going out to the hangar, but there isn't much that I can do with the 13 month old out there and do anything more than watch him.

Nice pictures, but I couldn't see any aircraft....all I could see was something about "bogarting"

Dad used to work out there and ran the photo lab. He was there when they restored the CAF's P-40 and FG-1D

Great to see the work progressing...

I have only been in that shop one time ,3-4 years ago, when they had a family day open house.

If you know someone that works out there, you might be able to butter them up and talk them in to taking you out there...

Would be nice to see the F6U (My favorite 1st generation jet) and the Pancake return home to Stratford! Well, at least i know the pancake was here, but I'm not sure about the pirate.

Chris;
The Pirate was saved by the New England Air Museum back in 1979. We had it in storage until a deal was made with the Vought Heritage group.

Why can't they have a public open house some time. It would seem if it is well handled from the other facilities security aspects, they could raise a little bit of money by allowing the public to see some the work in progress. I'd gladly pay $10.00 admission.

Bill.

Okay, so other than that Corsair, will any of these go airworthy ever?

There really are not enough flying F-8s...

So where are these aircraft going to be displayed? Is there a chance that we may see these historic aircraft return to CT? Or at least maybe they could be on loan? Of course this is when there will actually be a presentable place to exhibit aircraft.

Also: What happened to this S-43? Last i heard it was in Texas?

Maybe she can be brought home too! That, or maybe the NASM will loan us there Pearl Harbor S-43 and let us restore it? Of course this would be one heck of an undertaking. But I'm sure the Pacific Aviation Museum wants dibs on it first.

Pima has an S-43. I don't think the Hughes boat is leaving Texas anytime soon.

Short answer... no. Not even the F4U-4. It is being made up of mostly non-airworthy parts from a couple of aircraft that crashed at Oshkosh, and the former John Silberman project that was at Tom Reilly's for many years. The spar is non-original, and built up in a non-original manner (ie. several layers for the spar caps rather than single pieces). This was supposed to have been an FAA approved mod., but I think it was decided it shouldn't be used for one reason or another. The fuselage supposedly had some issues too, but I don't know the details on that.

No F-8U's currently flying, as far as I know, unless NASA still has one that they're using. Everyone else retired theirs. The French Navy were the last military users I believe, retiring theirs in the late '90's/early 2000.

The Pancake belongs to NASM, and I would imagine it will go straight to Udvar-Hazy when it's done. Not sure about the F6U. I must admit to being really happy when I saw that they'd taken it on. I remember seing it sitting in a very dishevelled heap at NEAM. Good that NEAM saved her though... pity she lost her wings... whatever happened to them?

Cheers,
Richard
