Hello all.

I'm new here

I recently asked this question on the Flypast Forum and was advised to ask ask it here.

I wondered, does anyone have any photos taken on the various sets of the film "Tora, Tora, Tora"? Whether in Hawaii, Japan or the USA sets, anything would be interesting.

Also has anyone got shots of the 'Japanese' aircraft under construction when they were converted from US trainers?

Or photos of the model ships which were apparently 40 feet long!

Or even photos of the full sized ship mock-ups, of which they made a few (Arizona, Akagi, etc.)

What became of the large models and full sized ships? Have they been kept in storage for future film use?

Hi, Dave!

100% sure, there was an article on Air Classics during the 1970s. I just saw it less than a month ago, but the magazine is not with me any longer, so I cannot tell you the exact dat / issue.

Saludos,

Tulio

I can't help you with pictures.

I would like to draw your attention to a list of aicraft used in the filming of Tora! Tora! Tora! You can find the list here...

http://www.warbirdinformationexchange.o ... loads.html

If in your research you come across any information you can add could you let me know. I would especially appreciate information about the T-6s converted in Japan with regards to serial and construction numbers. The list is lacking in that respect.

Regards,

Mike

I have some shots of one of the Japanese Aircraft carriers Models. It is located at ESAM in Schenectady NY. I’ll post them tonight (my tonight).

I believe the model of the USS Nevada used for the movie is on the USS Intrepid - Sea, Air
and Space Museum in NYC. From my memory, while large it is not 40', half that maybe.
Will look for pictures.

Hi and welcome Dave,
Air Classics ran two articles on "Tora" in separate issues; one about building the aircraft and one about the filming. They came out in '69 and '70. There were good pictures of the Kate and Val conversions, as well as the SBD that ended up not being used. The filming article had more good pictures but unfortunately ran many of them in black and white with a dark red tint overall that hid most of the detail. Newsweek had an article with a photo of the burned-out PBYs, which mentioned that "60 Minutes" had done a segment on the film investigating all the free help the Navy had given the production. Also, Thompson Productions of Beecher, IL used to sell "Tora" slides; I still have a set - they're nice production stills rather than "behind the scenes" shots. As you can imagine, it's still one of my favorite films - saw it in the theatre when I was ten, and years later I saved for months to buy my first VCR in time for WGN's annual Dec. 7 airing so I could tape it...

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I have one problem though, I cannot see any pictures. I have found just recently that on a few websites I cannot see any photos where they should be. This includes ebay and Trademe. Has anyone got any idea why suddenly I can't view pictures on certain sites while i can on others?

The only thing I can think of is I got an excellent new program called Secretmaker that blocks adware and spyware and spam and other nasty things. It works very well and has stopped the menace I was receiving previously of regular hordes of naughty spyware. Would this be blocking something I need to have? If so, can I get that something back and still keep Secretmaker? Sorry, I'm no genius when it comes to PC's.

I've got a friend that took some pictures on the set, while on a layover there. If I get over his way in the next few months, I'll borrow them and post some..........

Here are a few shots of the one Japanese Carrier model that I took at the Empire State Aeronautical Museum in NY. Seeing as it was so big it was a bit had to get good shots of.

It is my understanding that it was built for Tora Tora Tora and used in the filming.
