I have got Mayer Jacosen's briliant book on the aircraft and it covers the attempted restoration. I think, reading between the lines the airforce wasn't to keen on a B-36 size hole in the ground.
As a big fan of the aircraft I have mused on the practicalitys of keeping one airborne. Just imagine the spark plugs alone! 2x18x6=216! I dread to think how much that little lot would cost!. As for the fuel bill!.
I think I'll just have to play the opening sequence of "Strategic air command" VERY LOUD!!!!!!

What I'd like to see is a XF-85 Goblin that was supposed to be a parasite fighter for the peacemaker! I've read that it was very stable and nimble in flight but trying to do the trapeese recovery was a bear. I'm guessing you'd need about 10,000 feet of runway to operate with. And the Avgas, good grief! Maybe Mobil/Chevron/Texaco could sponsor the plane!
