What a great day for these posts! We just had a small gathering this morning of Pearl Harbor Survivors (The Last Man's Club)at our museum in Tulsa . We have recorded about 8 or so of their stories, which are available to museum visitors on a touch screen that allows folks to see the veterans telling their stories about that day. We've even got Ken Taylor telling his stories! Also on display next to the touchscreen is a complete Japanese aviator's uniform, navagational equipment, Japanese battle flag, etc. About 10 of the survivors were here this morning, which just gives you goosebumps. Talk about being in the presence of quiet greatness.

Notice on the picture of the B-24A where the RAF roundel was overpainted on the right wing when the USAAC took her over.

It kinda looks like the roundel is still in tact (so to speak) on the right side of the fuselage as well. I reckon they didn't have time to paint over it before the bombing took place. Hmmmmm..........

I have always been curious about this. What would have happened to these wrecked planes? Were they taken out to sea and simply dumped, would they have been brought back to the mainland so they could be melted down or would they have been melted down rite there in Hawaii?

That is the airplane that got me so interested in the early Liberators. Some folks think that bit of paint is actually an Air Ferrying Command or Air Transport Command logo like on some of the other B-24A photos we've collected. There is a difference of opinion about whether the Neutrality Flags and ATC logo were still there at Hickam or had been painted out. If anyone knows of a photo of #71 intact in Hawaii I'd sure like to see it! I still want to build a model of the first American bomber lost in WWII.
