Eric: If you have enough stuff that you can fill over half of a 40' trailer, and can swing the extra cost, spec air ride, exclusive use on the load. That way you will have the entire trailer all to your self. No other loads tagging along, no transloading at some warehouse....
Wings, center section and the like all need to be hard bolted to stands made out of 2x6's or heavier, areas that can't be bolted, heavy padding and good strapping to the stands. Stands should roll or be mounted to pallets for easy movement with pallet jacks. Figure that you will not have dock access at either end, so a rented forklift and a good rigging crew for both ends. Any special stuff you use to load, send it on the truck. Pallet jacks included. If you have to rent stuff, make sure you have at least the same stuff rented in Tenn. and available prior to getting there. Nothing makes things go worse than not being able to get what you need to offload.
Take lots of pictures as stuff is loaded and strapped down. Don't let the move crew rush you on checking for proper securement as things are loaded. If you don't like the way something is secured, work it out immediately with the crew. Have a supply of screws, nuts, bolts, washers and lumber on hand prior to loading so that you can make any additions that need to be done without holding up the load.
Lastly, make sure that someone will be at the drop site at least a couple of hours before the scheduled arrival time. That way, if things work out and they get there early, the small stuff can be unloaded while waiting for the rigging crew. Make sure that the contact info for the riggers is in the driver's hand so that they can give the crew a call a couple of hours out if need be. Other wise, hard schedule the riggers and forklift for a specific arrival time.
Above all, insure like crazy, document everything and have a decent amount of drinks and snack trays on hand at both ends...Snacks and drinks being available to entire loading/unloading party makes things go a heck of a lot faster...BTDT.
If you can't swing the exclusive load bit, or the company won't haul the aircraft, there are a couple of people that run ads on Barnstormers about moving aircraft by road.
San Diego to Tenn. is about 60 hours with the current "Hours of service" rules.
Good luck with your move....I dread having to move my stuff...the house is full, three 10x40 storage units, the carport, part of the back yard, a section of a friend's warehouse and even my own big trailer...all are packed with stuff...
