Speaking about P-38 dumps - what about Shemya ?

Hi all

following the interesting threads on P-38 wrecks and dumps, I started wondering what happened in remote places like Shemya, where obsolete aircraft were dumped, too - below are two photos from around 1946 - anyone ?

as a follow up - I just found an information that states that "most of the Lightnings that were there were dumped in the ocean just of the coast in November 1947"

Believe it or not, I actually posted an inquiry on Barnstormers several years ago regarding this subject. It turns out one of the former C.O.'s of the base emailed me back, and said there is nothing existant on Shemya itself.

Shemya Island is almost the tip of the Aleutian chain.

Interesting wrecks certainly still exist in the Aleutians, but I'm just as certain that the State of Alaska has put some legal restrictions concerning recovery. My never-ending race towards senility prevents me from remembering just exactly WHAT those restrictions are.

Who's familiar with current policy?
