Last weekend was quite productive for me as I managed to produce a number of videos and post them on YouTube.

Mikey...You ROCK. Terrific videos.

OK...Question/opinion. It seemed to me that in the Mustang/Spitfire video that the engines had distinctly different sounds. The Merlin in the Mustang kinda had a "sing" to it, while the Spit's Merlin had more of a "growl". My imagination? DUH :?

Mudge the hearing impaired :shock:

Geez thanks! I am glad you like them.

Do you like the Lancaster? Coming soon is in-flight video captured during a 15 minute hop in the Lanc which I was fortunate to take part in.

You are right, the two do sound differnt. The Mustang tends to pre-announce it's arrival with a whistle/whine sound. I have been told that component actually comes from the air movement around the gun ports. I like that part. It gets the hairs standing up on your back before you even get the thrill of roar for real.

Great job Mike, and hats off the Mike and Tim for some excellent tight formations in the Spit and Stang. Nice to see they are flying these machines with a little more than just straight passes, even some acro in the Spit Well done. I hope they are present at Ottawa this year and do the same.

Actually I think the acro was Rob Erdos. He has been working up a routine, but just hasn't had a chance to be certified to perform at airshows yet. There may be some footage of Mike in the Spit in there. I am not sure that all of it came from the same flight.

For Mudge, several years ago @ Abbotsford Airshow the Mynarski Lanc flew in formation with a Spit, the CWH Hurricane and two P-51's (as I 'members it) talk about one engine type giving you ten different perspectives-got more wood than Weyerhauser!!!!!!

As an afterthought it occured to me I should point out that the Merlins in the Musang and the Spitfire in the videos are nearly identical in that both are Packard Merlins. Some people claim they can tell the difference between equivalent Rolls Royce and Parkard Merlins. I am not sure I have ever had the opportunity to try. I also understand that the shape and length of the exhaust stacks will affect the sound. I prefer the sound of a Mustang on a high speed pass, but that is just my opinion.

The Merlin does have a very nice source, and I tend to find the radials don't inspire (with respect to audio). The Collings F4U-5NL has the flame damper stacks which gives that plane a very unique and appealing sound. Then there is DB-601 in the Bf-109, that one edges out a Merlin in a Mustang when it comes to sound IMHO.
