Lately we have had some good photos taken at NMNA posted.
Yesterday I made my annual Mardi Gras trip and shot some
images of areas not quite as accessable. I hope some folks
are interested and enjoy them. Both the restoration area and
some storage areas are shown. Prominent are the Coronado,
the JD-1, the Lake Birds, the Inflataplane, and a lot of inert
ordinance as well as the AR-196.......and the list goes on.

Interesting. What's the deal with the Arado, notice some panels are off.... Some restoration going on? I heard the airframe was damaged in an underpass on the trip from Willow Grove.....

Very nice stuff!
Though when i look at most of those birds. I see potential flyers, not dust magnets. The Navy has plenty of F4F's and SBD's by now, no? They should let the last remaining airframes go into private hands. Or at least make a buck off them!

I am told some of them will soon be headed to new homes.
However, I doubt it will be as flight worthy.

The Arado was originally largely fabric-covered. Looks like it was "sheet metaled" during its years on outdoor display. I'm assuming the museum is removing the skin to assess the structural deterioration.
Looks like they've got a complete set of turrets for the Privateer. Hopefully they'll figure out a way to get her in out of the weather before installing them.

Owen, you couldn't get those F-18 burner nozzles for Mike ? You come wheelin' up with those and I bet he'd make you King for a day !

I am told the Arado will go into restoration "soon". If you look at the
picture of the wings you can see where sheet aluminum has been
peeled back to look inside. You will also see that there are no
control surfaces visible. That is because, some time in the distant
past it was sheetmetaled over completely. Also, pop rivets were
used and the damage to the canopy/cockpit was sustained during
transport; the result of an overpass.

Shortly after Ivan, we recd a call that invited several museums already in the Navy loan program to come over and tag some items that we thought might enhance our displays. The guys from Midway got there first. We were second. We went through and tagged a bunch of the small stuff that is in your pictures. After we left the whole idea was squashed, Midway got nothing, we got nothing. Apologies were made and accepted for wasting our time. The next time I was at the museum I saw that a great many of the items that we tagged were now being used in some capacity on the main museum floor. Now I see in Owen's pictures that a lot of the stuff we saw is now sitting in the new warehouse.
When we looked at the Arado's wings they were stacked like cordwood in a small alcove. They were full of intergranular corrosion. The F4Fs were there and a couple were on their gear with the wings folded. There was a Dauntlas on its gear sans wings. All had their engines still installed. One of the Wildcat's engine was still leaking oil ! The T-34s look just the same.
The building that all of this was in was built like a fort, was prewar and was close to the Lexington's berth. They said it had about 5-6 ft of storm surge in it. The base commander said that there wasn't enough money to repair all of the buildings so he had some of them torn down. Some went back as far as the Civil War. What a waste !

Owen, thanks for sharing your photos with us. Have you heard any updates on the status of the stuff that came out of Trader Jon's? I sure would love to see it displayed. Thanks.

It was going to be set up like a snack bar/restaurant much
like the Cubi Bar at NMNA. That was before Ivan. I don't
