When I was restoring the cockpit of my 1948 Cessna 140 I was dumbfunded by a squarish hole on top of the panel.

Then looking at the original parts catalog for something else I realized that they originally had an ashtrey in there, back in the ol'days...

Dan K,

"Rauschen" is the equivalent of rustling or murmuring. You were thinking of "kehren", which is to sweep. And in the dump I work at, kehren does seem to be verboten.

Thanks Scott, you're quite right..."kehren"...I haven't practiced vocabulary since high school.

"Rauchen Verboten" would have been posted near the aircraft.

Now back to "rauschen": Is that (perhaps) also a term used in techno-speak to describe radio static noise? Just curious.

I have read that due to the (leaky) design of the B-24 fuel system that not many crews smoked in them. I have also read about P-51's with ashtrays installed, and of course Major Boyington's habit of flipping out his butt through a slightly slid-back canopy before going into combat....

Having smoked for 20 years until about 2 years ago, I can't say that if I did still smoke that I'd want to go 6 hours (or more) without a smoke, especially in a stressful (or boring, or both...) situation.

Those were the days!
