The Air Zoo is open year round. A cool place to visit. The Yankee Air museum has a hangar on the field at Willow Run and they will let you in, but you have to be escorted. The field aircraft like the B-52 are in a gated area, and you have to be with a museum volunteer to get there.

I visited Y.A.M. today; B-17, B-25, C-47 and a Stinson, plus a DH-C Buffalo (or is it a Caribou?). Unable to get in to see the B-52, since it is icy and cold, and I was told that not until May, there will be someone available to escort visitors there.

The plan will be to go to Kalamazoo in 2 or 3 weeks, if possible.

It's a caribou. They just recently got a hold of it, and are going to put it on static display, once repainted in Vietnam era livery.
The YAM is also building a SPAD, although I don't know if they intend to fly it.

It will be better when they are on their feet again, and have an actual museum to visit.

If interested, there are also a few aircraft on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, and some cool stuff to see at the Jackson Space Center.

I'll second the recommendation for the Henry Ford. An all around neat place to spend a day.

The space center in Jackson has been closed for at least a year. I believe that the stuff from Jackson went to the Air Zoo.

The only things of interest in Jackson would be a T-6 hangered there (owner??) and Will Ward's Mig-17. Don't know contact info for either, though.


Forgot....There's also an outdoor display at Selfridge, north of Detroit. East of I-94 on M-59 (?). Probably closed this time of year, but visible from the road.

I bought a book about Selfridge Field at the Y.A.M. store : )

Depending on available time, the Henry Ford Museum will be visited, as well as Selfridge.

But what about Jack Taft's static rebuild project of the super-rare P-400? The last I heard he was still in the Jackson area, but the last photos I've seen have got to be at least five years old.

If you get a chance to go to the Henry Ford, do it when the weather is nice. In the Greenfield village lies the original Wright Bicycle shop where the brothers built the Wright Flyer, plus a load of other historically significat buildings (edisons wworkshop, Firestone farm etc..)

It is within a very reasonable driving distance, and I will do my best to go there in the next couple of weeks.

Although I've never been there, I'm guessing that the P-400 is at a private residence. I would definitely contact Mr. Taft before making the journey. I would think a white pages search at MSN.com would do the trick.
