Warbird Information Exchange

I am headed to Boston for a few days (St. Patty's day) and was wondering if there were any easily viewable warbirds in the city or close by.

I checked the Locater but it didnt turn up much.

I think Collings' collection is based near there, but it's private. A fellow WIX-er might be able to help you out, though. Doesn't hurt to ask...

FOUND the elusive DT-built B-24! Woo-hoo!!!

Yes, we are based in Stow, MA which is about 45 minutes (on a good day, for a person who knows where they are going) outside of Boston. We are not open to the public on a daily basis, but we do some private tours here throughout the summer. The bad part this time of the year is that the hangar is not heated, so it stays pretty cold later into the Spring.

PM me the times you are thinking of if you are interested in a look at the airplane collection, and I will see if someone will be around to open up for you.

I believe there is an EAA Warbird chapter based on the north shore. Beyond that there are some antiques and L-birds abotu 45min norht of the city in Hampton, NH. However, as a former Bostonian, are your really going to go to Boston on St. Patty's day and be able to drive???

Very true, hehe. I'll be driving up Sunday night with a friend that lives there, and spending a few days there.

I was just hoping there could have been something like Chicago has with the Stuka and Spitfire at the Museum of Sci & Ind.

Here on the Warbird Starved North Shore we have to travel all over the country to see these things. But there are a few locals in the area.

Around the corner from us at Beverly Municipal Airport there is an early Huey mounted on a pole as a Vietnam Memorial, and a Two Seat Mig-15 sitting on the corner of the ramp. There is a 1830 powered Yak-11 based on the airport but we dont see much of it in the winter. There is also a C-1 in the airport but it is not a easy thing to see if you are not looking for it.

Lawrence airport to the north has a few small WB's that come and go from time to time but they are mostly hangared.

I havent been to a WB Sq. 7 meeting in almost a year, so I havent heard of the next meeting place, but it usualy involves a Sunday morning breakfast somewhere close by.

There are two airplanes mounted on poles at Hanscom AFB in Bedford, an F-86 and a 3/4 scale fiberglass P-40. No gate guards or airpark display area.

There is nothing in town, unless you want to see a Cutaway 4360 at the Museum of Science. I have heard that Caroline Collings has a Boutique on Newbury Street.

There is an amazing Chocolate store in Manchester-by-the-Sea if you need any Chocolate Bunnies for the upcoming Holiday!

OK, not exactly Boston, a lot closer to Hartford, CT, but a unique opportunity none-the-less.

As far as driving in Beantown goes, with all due respect as a life-long native, the roads were laid out by a drunken cow and notoriously difficult to navigate. I always suggest that "tourists" never drive in downtown Beantown, but take public transportation, a.k.a. "The Rattle", a.k.a. the MBTA.

Try Durgin Park for a traditional New England dining experience, sans pseudo-Irish wanabees.

I plan on getting directions for any of the Museums I may pass on the way home. I'll be passing through Hartford on 84, hopefully I can check the NEAM out.

As far as driving, my friend lives in Somerset right at a T-stop, so well only be driving to and from a parking garage. I'll be headed up there this evening.
