Warbird Information Exchange

Just wondering if any of you have the AOPA AD&D insurance. I got a piece from them offering it and was just wondering if it covered warbird flights.
I talked to a lady at AOPA and she read me the "fine print" and from what I can understand, it covers all GA aircraft. What she read to me describes GA aircraft as any that aren't military or commercial and are registered with the FAA. She said she interprets that to mean any a/c that has an "N" number.

Can any of youse troops fill me in on what' the facts are?

I would double check the fine print for prohibitions mentioning the word "Experimental" as most Warbirds fly in that category.

I have AOPA non-owners insurance and it covers all categories of operation on mine, but I agree to be sure that it does include Experimental, Restricted, and Light Sport categories as all three are potential certifications for Warbirds and if you don't have coverage, then it doesn't do you much good.

Here's the answer I just got from AOPA:

Here you will find that travel or flight, in or on or descent from or with, a
military aircraft. (Except when that aircraft has a civil airworthiness
certificate in the normal or utility category in civil use pursuant to the
category rating at the time of the accident.)

As it stands, most of those aircraft you listed will be in either the normal or
restricted category. If restricted, the plan will exclude these flights even as a passenger. The only way to determine which category these aircraft fall into is to physically look at the type certificate for each plane.

(The a/c I asked about were: B-17, B-24, B-25, P-40, P-51, Skyraider, T-6)

Sounds like a good, well thought out, definite MAYBE to me.

What about the "Limited" category? That's where most P-51s are.

OK...I got this thing from AOPA that is an aviation AD&D policy. It covers AD&D from any accident involving a GA aircraft. It excludes all commercial a/c and all military a/c.

Here's an excerpt from the policy:

In no event will we pay the accidental death or dismemberment benefit when your death or dismemberment results from or is caused directly or indirectly by any of the following:

* Suicide whether sane or insane;
* Intentionally self-inflicted injury;
* Travel or flight in or on, or descent from or with:
o civil A military aircraft (except military aircraft with a air-worthiness certificate in the normal or utility category in civil use pursuant to the category rating at the time of the accident)

I have no idea whether or not that would include our beloved warbirds.

That sounds to me like, "If it's got an "N" number it's covered by the exception noted above and the policy would be in force.

I dunno'...I looked in the mirror this morning and didn't see a lawyer looking back at me so I'm stumped.
