A friend sent me this link about an escape tunnel named Harry. 76 Allied airmen escaped through this tunnel in 1944. The link has some really cool animations.

I think you might have typed a little too fast!
The Film was based on the actual escape, not the other way around.
They would've been prisoners until about 1963 if they waited to be inspired by the film!

Tom, the rule is no drinking on final approach!
Did you see the NOVA program that came out several years ago? They went back to Stalag III with three survivors and excavated the un-used tunnel, quite good. It's available on DVD. See also Rob Davis's Great Escape web site.
