Here is another photo of the original MLG tire for the B-36/XC-99. I took this picture of Elly and the tire in September of '82 when we were on our honeymoon trip to the Air Force Museum. 8)

The B-19 wheel/tire assembly was 8 feet in diameter, according to an AAF survey on aircraft component costs.

That is my good friend Bernie Poppert holding up the crate who is nowhere near as pretty as Elly.

Notice that the outer fluting on the rim of the two wheels doesn't match? The picture Taigh just posted is identical to the original shot of the XB-36 with the man leaning on it, while the one at the NMUSAF has a different flute design.

Chad,

I told her I was gonna post it, so I'm in the clear. (I think)

Ryan,

I still can't believe she let me spend five days at Dayton on our honeymoon. I'm EXTREMELY lucky to have found someone who puts up (and actually participates) with my various interests.

All the XB-36 pix are really neat. The tracked lg is about weird though. Looks heavy and complicated.

And whatever became of the B-19?

Canso42,

The XB-19 was retired to Davis Monthan and stored, ostensibly for eventual museum display. She was broken up a few years later along with the sole surviving B-32, XA-38 and other one-of-a-kind types.

As for the XB-36, it was used up as a fire training aircraft at Carswell.

Douglas A-20H-10-DO (TA-20H) in flight after the installation of an experimental tracked main landing gear. (U.S. Air Force photo)

I'm sorry to say it, but seeing the pic of the Douglass A-20H-10-DO'h, the first thing that comes to mind is "I'm bringing home a ba-by bum-ble-bee, uh do'h do'h, do'h do'h, de de de de dee"

lol

Wheels up mentioned earlier that the Superfortress was used to test the tracked landing gear concept. I accidentally found this photo of a B-50 with just such an installation.

I knew I had a photo of the XB-19 tire and a girl. I finally stumbled onto it tonight:
