This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Hi, does anybody have any photo's of the A-1'S that are still in Vietnam, or know how many are left. Also any L-19's that are still there.

Two of the military muesums in Saigon/Ho Hi Min City have Skyraiders on display. One complete, the other a wreck.
But how would I post the photos?

Neat photos. I do find it interesting that the complete Skyraider is in suedo U.S. markings. Considering that it was most likely in SVAF markings at the time of it's capture. Talk about holding a grudge.

I award no points for accuracy on the paint scheme.

Don't know if this is true or not, but I have been told by a reliable source that has done considerable export to the US work out of SEA, that all the aircraft that were abandoned in Vietnam were placed on a "Not to be imported" list. Ie. no import authorization and automatic customs seizure if bonded for US import. The list was compiled sometime right after the fall and it was broken down by model, type and serial numbers. At the time, my source was working on importation of somewere in the neighborhood of 30-40 L-19's and a couple of other aircraft, taking delivery in Thailand, all of which had been abandoned in Vietnam according to USAF records. He was visited by some State Dept and Customs suits and told that he shouldn't waste his time or money on the project as the aircraft would not be allowed through Customs.
As I said, I can't say that the list is real, but the source was reliable enough that it would be well worth the time and effort to verify it's authenticity prior to trying to bring an ex-Vietnam bird to the US.

Well
Sort of the list does exist in as much as it is supposed to apply to exports or aircraft from Vietnam but as with all of this there are ways and in fact a number of these aircraft are flying in the States as we speak - I recently had to do some paperwork and it all went through OK so I guess the list must have expired but it did definately cause problems a few years back.

cvairworks,
Is it SE Asia, or Vietnam this "list" affects? I'm curious about stuff in Laos,
Cambodia, and Mynamar. I have seen recent photos(2001+) on other
web-sites of aircraft dumps in Vientienne etc., which look promising.
Maybe not AD's..but there were L-bird, Skywagon, and Helio FAC stuff.
I have no clue as to the stability of these countries..but I am curious nonetheless..
Setter..any thoughts?

Hi
I suggest you write to the appropriate authorities in the states and get the official position - I did it diplomatically through the State Dept but as a US resident I imagine it may have been different.
I think Cambodia , Laos Vietnam Thailand and even the Philipines were included

As a wreck rebuilder that dont mean S%$&. Simple drill off all of the Serial number data plates Strip off all of the markings and bring them in one at a time thru Mexico as C-170 parts. They probably don't have paperwork anyway so it doesn't matter. I have rebuilt several planes from two or three wrecks and the best logs ended up with the best Airframe. I wouldn't let that bother you. Anyway your going to have a hard time dealing with those people because they want the same price as if they were flying. Good Luck.

No Setter...I meant how are the US/SEA relations nowadays...in your
opinion of the area. I wasn't interested as if I'm "off to the goldrush"..
as has been prevalent here lately! Is it relaxing or tightening going
into the 2nd term of this US Gubment? Have the internal tensions
of these regions relaxed significantly since post Pol Pot, Khmer days etc.?
Like I say, for the stuff I'm interested in, the shopping is better here at
home. Sometimes it's overvalued and accordingly priced...but it doesn't cost as much to say no! I can walkaway grumbling about the gasoline bill.

There were two T-28's that passed through Chino that came from Laos, in fact one has been restored and is based there. I'm thinking it was in the 1991 timeframe they were recovered.
