I'm certainly glad we had a chance to see these two aircraft in flight.

If my memory serves me correctly, the CAF's "junkyard" was just to the right of this picture, to the side of the white hangar. There they had all kinds of interesting bits and pieces, including some Mosquito nacelles/undercarriage. Do you have any pictures of this area?

Yes, I do have photos of the storage area/corrosion corner. I'll get them posted yet tonight if I don't run short of time. That corner was the first place we went after going through the hangar on our first day in Harlingen.

I mentioned that we headed out to the "storage area" early on during our Harlingen trip all those years ago. Ellen didn't quite agree that the stuff out in the corner was all that exciting to look at back then. Last year, she would wander about on The Hill or in Chuck's Place at Midland trying to identify parts. She has seen the light.

warbird1, I thought I had a few photos of the smaller parts in the storage area, but I can't seem to find any now other than that pile of 3350s. I seem to remember someone posting pictures of the Mosquito components on WIX a while back, but I have no idea what thread they were on. Sorry I can't help with your request.

That B25 in the last pic is the one that was Hap Arnold's transport. Now flies as Miss Hap. When I was about 7 or 8 it was in bad shape and semi abandoned. I remember it wore that paint and I have a pic of myself in the nose. That was a fun thing to explore for a 7 year old.

It still amazes me that such an early production B-25 should survive, even if it was General Arnold's personal aircraft. Ike's airplane, 43-4030, is at Ellsworth on display, but did Arnold's other Mitchell survive as well?

My first "up close" warbird experience was walnut shell-blasting the aft fuselage of what (I think) became the CAF Red Tail P-51 while the Colonels went flying. I did that only once and decided that volunteering wasn't as cool as drinking beer at the lake. I was seventeen then, and I sure wish I'd kept at the warbird stuff instead of Budweiser. Maybe I'd have made something of myself.

That's o.k., thanks for trying anyways! I remember seeing those parts back there during the Airsho's of the late 70's/early 80's. Since film was so expensive to shoot and develop, I never took any shots of those parts. I was so obsessed with the flying aircraft, I always neglected the "back 50". Awesome thread, brings back a lot of memories. I have some high quality slides that I took back in the day during that time, but they're buried deep within my parents' storage facility. It would take me years to find them. One day, I hope to post those sometime.
