I remember the day vividly. I was at Grosseto AFB for the airshow, and OFMC/Breitling had the Corsair and (I think) P-51 there. I asked the crew if Mark were there. No, they said, he's in Spain. Then next morning, back at the office, someone handed me an awful clipping from a UK paper.

Very sad indeed , I had the pleasure of talking to Mark at Wanaka in 1996 and have a signed print of him flying the converted '109G-10' that he flew in spectacular style for the show. Much missed down here ever since.
I wonder how long before the remains are advertized as a rebuilt project on Barnstormers ....like the totally destroyed South African Spit IX that suffered a similar fate { as did the pilot }, that appeared a year or so ago ;-0

I feel so stupid....on my visit to Duxford around 10 Sept, 1997, Mark walked right past me and my friend, and I didn't say hi. Later that week while at another friend's in Guernsey, I watched a video of Mark flying with a tv host, and he seemed to be the nicest guy! Two years later, flying into Manchester from Hungary, the same friend who I was with when Mark walked by, told me that he'd had a crash, had lived for a day and then died of his injuries. darn sad.

Indeed, very sad, Mark was a thoroughly nice guy and had a great deal of time for anyone interested in old aircraft, I personally spent a lot of time over the years chatting about this and that. Sadly missed.

Thanks for this piece of information. I had no idea Mark made a pilot error and he actually lived to see the next day. Very sad story. Knowing his career as a professional pilot and showpilot it is almost beyond comprehension this accident. Sometimes just few meters define if we live or die. This reminds me of the Ari Piippos death in Ramstein flying Valmet Vinha which did not recover from a loop. Ari Piippo had logged lotsa hours in a MIG 21.

Me 109 flies so differently compared to P-51D or Spitfire. Turning radius in enermous. Did they say how many hours had Mark Hanna logged on this plane ?

Before you make any judgements on the Spanish report, may I respectfully suggest you carefully read Keith Skilling's letter in Dec04 Aeroplane Monthly!! It puts a balance in there sadly missing from the report; likewise the following letter.

The video of the accident on the news at the time didn't show any fire, so not sure where that came from.

FYI The video at the time did show a considerable impact fire.

As to the cause of the crash? There has been a lot of informed discussion in the Aviation press over the past couple of months with significant contributions from those with local knowlege of the airfield concerned and also from OFMC themselves, including members who witnessed the sad event.

Before passing hasty judgement here folks, I suggest that you try to read the 'Aeroplane' monthly letter contributions from OFMC and others which cast a very different light upon the Spanish report. Not as simple as a case of pilot error at all and in all probability local meterlogical conditions may have played a significant part in this accident.
