Salvage Ops

We had discussed earlier about the proposition of doing salvage ops. Here's the problem statement: You are a spook, and no plane recovery is illegal; you wish to recover any planes available on XYZ airfield, Kalmintan. XYZ airfield, Kalmantan is separated by a distance 2000-3000 miles from the nearest city in Australia. It is 500 miles from other Indonesian islands with infrastructure including Java, and Summatra which we assume have limited resources due to the Tsunami. Also you are about 400 miles from a few villages. How do you get the P-40 you just found off the bomb cratered airport which is 2500' long (near the shore), and to Sydney Australia, then to Baton Rouge Louisana? You still must handle customs legally. Let's hear it folks..

Chris,

First don't take your recovery to Australia, the quarantine rules will cost you a fortune, Australia is not the only point of civilisation in this part of the world. All items entering Australia must pass quarantine, and unless you have a certificate from a recognised cleaning company in your export country they will charge you a big cleaning fee.

Think laterally, where are the nearest main international container shipping ports from your recovery point. Which of these is a "free port" meaning there are no import/export duties or taxes payable.

Can you store your recovery in one of these ports for a period while you sort out paperwork to get it to Nola?

Study a map of the area, learn all you can about the area, the people their customs and try to get a little bit of the language down, even if it is only a few words, it's surprising how far you can get with just a few basic words, like please, thankyou, problem, no problem etc.

The average shipping cost for a 20' container from an Asian port to US Gulf port is around US$2500+, start from there and work upwards, this will give you an indication of the total cost of the recovery.

Think seriously about employing people who are experts in their respective fields, a dollar spent in advance could save you thousands in the end.

Singapore is a huge hub in that part of the world? How hard is it to move things through there?

Not as nice a DownUnder but it is nice. And fairly safe (or it was when I was there)

Why screw around, ask Rob Greinert in Sydney. He is the best recoverer
in the South Pacific. And he is relatively cheap in comparison to others.

A lot of Museums approach Rob for help because of his intimate knowledge of the ways of these people. A PNG National was once qouted as saying that Rob was a black guy trapped in a white mans skin.

Here's a thorny thought.

If the P-40 was ex-RAAF, would it be subject to Australian regulations regarding the export of cultural artifacts? Could your P-40 be impounded once it was in Australia?

Singapore definately the go. The freight cost ex-SNG to the USA will be the least part, though. Getting it from XYZ to Singapore could cost a pretty penny.

If the aircraft are as remote as you say, could you just turn up in a landing craft, drive off your all-terrain crane,pick them up and off you go, full steam ahead. It will take balls, but what the heck, your neck, not mine.... Best of luck!!!!

There are American's living in Olongapo??? I remember that place has a dirty, rundown, smelly, strange and scary place. We actually got immentent danger pay there!! The only place I've seen albino midgets and people being cruicified! The only possibly worse place was Mombasa, Kenya.

All of this is speculation. Rob G would be my only port of call as he knows what he is doing ....

People have been recently arrested doing what you are suggesting and they don't play about when they catch you .....very expensive lesson.

As for Guns / Firepower a famous Australian is cooling his heals in Indonesia for being caught with weapons on board and will probably lose his freedom and boat - he is lucky - don't count on out shooting pirates.

This is really not to be taken lightly - please be very careful in your efforts - we need all the forumites we can keep - there are no PCs in Indonesian jails.
