CAF P-51C Redtail Down? Can anyone confirm???????

Was at Addison Apt with Cavanaugh Museum flyday..... heard that the P-51C (flying in Minnesota) engine quit and the a/c went down in trees. Pilot alive, but hurt. Airframe????? Please tell me this did not happen.... Alan

Yes, the Red Tail is down in Bay City, WI. I can't provide much more detail than that. I was at the airshow where the incident happened. I saw the P-51C flying low, but not alarmingly so, I looked in the other direction at a B-25, and the Mustang was not there when I looked back to where it should have been. Word at the show was that the pilot was concious when rescue crews arrived at the scene.

The local news just said the pilot is in serious condition. My thoughts and prayers are with him.

I was at the show and it was Don Hinz flying the C today. Doug R was flying the B-25. Larry Lumpkin was flying GUNFIGHTER II.

Any aircraft can be rebuilt nowdays, especially a Mustang. My thoughts right now are with the pilot, the Crew Chief John Beyl (who posts here quite a bit), and for the longevity of the C.A.F. Lets stay focussed, and hope for the best.

Don Hinz is one of the nicest, most personable people I've met flying warbirds. Jim is right. Any airplane can be rebuilt, but guys like Don are irreplaceable. I'm hoping he'll be okay. Gary

I flipped on the local news tonite and there it was, the remains of the red-tailed 51 lying on it's side. Just about broke my heart

When I was a kid back in the 70s that bird sat in pieces outside Jack Sandberg's hanger in Crystal Minnesota, where I took flying lessons. I remember sneaking into the cockpit on more then one occasion and dreaming of taking it home with me. I really love that bird.

I sure hope the pilot recovers and maybe that somehow they can bring her back too.
