Warbird Information Exchange

There is a picture of Leonardo DiCaprio from "The Aviator" in the Times today. He is seen getting out of a SE5a with the words 'William Bishop' and Victoria Cross painted on the side. Obviously to do with Hells Angels

As one who has NOT seeen the film, is this in the film or just a publicty shot and if so did they use a SE5a or was it just a stage prop or replica

I believe that you SE5a in the movie is Jack Kearby's (sp?). He is a flying buddy of the Tulsa Bunch I fly with and the plane is absolutely immaculate. He built it from scratch and has the hispano engine in it. I think he easily put 10,000+ hrs into building that plane and it shows. There was an article in the Tulsa World mentioning something about his bird being in the movie.

The fullscale SE5A replica from the Great War Flying Museum was used in The Aviator. It has Bishops name etc painted on the left side of the cockpit. I believe it was this aircraft used in that photo

Yes, The Great War Flying Museum in Brampton Ontario shipped both the SE5a and Fokker D.VII to California for the movie
