Hughes/MD OH6 Questions

Wed Jan 26, 2005 8:35 am

Any Helicopter experts out there?

Can the OH-6 be taken through certification to make it into a 500? What is the process and who is out there doing it?

What is the value of an OH-6, restored and unrestored, Standard Category and Experimental?

Any OH-6 projects for sale out there?

Thanks,

I know ALOT of ex-military OH-6's went to Police departments and border patrol aganecies. Granted, these agencies seem to spend most of thier time accidently chopping the tail booms off with the main rotor (check NTSB records of OH-6's) Wouldn't these be in the standard catagory? Or do they have exemptions?

There was a fellow in CA a few years back that bought what he thought was a hulk of a 500 but turned out to be a OH-6 #17340. He completely restored it in it's Viet Nam markings Capt Hugh Mills "Miss Clawd IV" from the Big Red One in VN. It flew for a while but is at Fort Rucker now.

Mustangpilot recently aquired an OH-6. It's an actual combat vet, having been damaged in Vietnam. He sent me the serial number, but it's laying on my desk at home. I believe it's being painted right now. Seems like he told me he'd already flown it a few times. It should be on display at the Olympic Flight Museum in Washington here directly.

Yep
Can the OH-6 be taken through certification to make it into a 500? What is the process and who is out there doing it? NO this cannot be done. You cannot put an OH-6 is Standard any longer either and there is a request to pull the existing Standard OH-6 certs right now.

What is the value of an OH-6, restored and unrestored, Standard Category and Experimental? $150,000-$250,000.

Any OH-6 projects for sale out there? None.

Thanks,

Brad and/or mustangpilot,

Is this aircraft listed in my OH-6 registry? If not could I get the info on this aircraft and possibly a picture if its available?

Thanks,

Editor:
I just emailed the history of one of the OH-6's I have. Can you post it for the guys?

The ones for the most part being flown by local law enforcement and some of the fire protection districs are being flown as "Public Service" aircraft and do not have to adhere to the FARs. In fact, some of the departments don't even require the pilots's to have licenses.

Hmmm,
I used to help do annuals on an OH-6 operated by a Unnamed Government agency. What a great machine, it had the larger engine and transmission.
The pilot who used it loved it, he would go out and play around the airport on days when he did not have a "Mission", including hovering on one skid on the side of a hill, tall grass rodeo, and auto rotations. Very fun to watch!

I dont remember any info on it and I have not seen it around in a while, but it was also a vet with a few small patches around the bottom.

As far as I know OH-6s are considered ex-military experimantal exhibition, unless you change the data plate, and adhere to the civilian engine and specs. The Oh-6 also has a different engine which is not a very good powerplant.

This is not really true. You use to be able to conform the the MD TCDS and get Standard A/W. A lot of OH-6's now have the upgraded engine, the 250C20C of 420 H.P. That's what makes them a Hot machine. It's a great engine and the same performance as in all the civil ships.

Certification...

Fri Jan 28, 2005 8:59 am

Mustang Pilot,
Who did the work for the compliance for certifications? Is it still being done? If it is not being done, is it because of FAA or manufacturer? I understand FAA heartburn with the ol' data plate switch, but have they legitimately stopped anybody from doing the conversion? If manufacturer, I am guessing "old airframe syndrome?"
Also, what is this expensive new AD on the Allison 250? What was wrong with the original powerplant in the OH6? I know it was a de-rated engine but they DID set a lot of records with that engine? What were its problems and are they still obtainable? Are the OH-6's still in widespread use in police applications, or are all the OH58's replacing them?
And can anybody recommend any good sites with message boards for helicopters? Thanks!

Forgotten Field,

Send mustangpilot an email or private message about the sikorsky tail rotor gear box for the S-51. He has the helicopter I was hunting parts for.
