The registry has this Corsair and a F4U-4B. Why the 6-50 cal Machine-guns and not the 20mm Canons? So is it really a "B"?

Also
The Me-208 that was at Geneseo, does anyone have the FAA # on that. No pictures I have show it.

The answer is!!! The wings have been changed at one point in it's life. This would have taken place after it's military service. The six gun wings were available and were installed. F4U-4B's came Factory produced with 20MM's and metalized outboard trailing edge wing panels!!

Have it in my logbook... N208K. Originally built by Harold Kindsvater, bought by Dr. Bill Anderson, and traded to Jerry Yagen. Now at Fighter Factory.

When I worked for Moseley Aviation, I use to eat my lunch sitting in the cockpits of at least six F4U-4's, during the of summers 1964-65. All belonged to Bob Bean at the time. I can't remember the wings being removed but most all the control surfaces were off. These were sold out of NAS Litchfield Park and had to be removed from U.S. Navy property within like 30 days of sale. Bob Bean had them towed down the road 10 miles or so to Moseley Field and from their were sold to private owners, thus starting the warbird movement. More trivia!!

Thanks for the help!

Great to know 2 "4B" are around. Now if only a AU-1, F4U-2, and the Birdcage came out of hiding in South America.

I remember reading about Mr.Beans field of Corsairs in an old Air Classics magazine from the 1970'sI was fascinated by just the thought of a whole bunch of Corsairs sitting out in some field. The story mentioned that there were even bullet holes from people using them for target practice!that really freaked me out.Ah the good ol 70's! I remember them well. Tim

As best I can tell, no Corsairs that left the factory as F4U-4B models still exist today - at least according to their history cards and Bureau of Aeronautics cross reference lists. There's always the chance that the plane's actual data plate might reflect something different, or that one of the planes was converted into a cannon-armed plane after leaving the factory. Most if not all of the planes were redirected to assembly & repair departments immediately upon leaving the factory where the latest upgrades and approved mods were performed on the plane before final delivery to the Navy. There's always the chance the wings could have been swapped, but the a&r upgrade codes are usually reflected on a data plate inside the plane as well, to the best of my knowledge anyway.

My data shows all of the -4B BuNo's being in the 62xxx to 63xxx range, exception of 97487, 97507, and 97527.
