I fly a 172, so its quite thrifty on the gas, but then my budget is not a fountain. I may be having to be choosy where I go. :(

But the bigger then engine, the more it drinks. What does a B-25 take? Close to 100 gal/hr?

And then the engine oil itself. :O

I was wondering if it will affect the turn out at airshows or not.

Well, gas prices are one of the reasons I'm not going to the CWH this weekend. I'd love to go to Genesseo, but with gas prices like these we'll have all we can do to afford our trip to the IPMS Naitonal Convention in VA Beach in August (same weekend as Thunder, unfortunately.) At least that trip will include a visit to the Fighter Factory, and hopefully the NASM and Udvar-Hazey as well.

My guess is closer to 80 GPH each.

I was thinking both for 100gal/hr. If its 80 each, then looking 160gal/hr.

YIKES!

When AvGas prices started up 1-2 years ago, I stopped doing a bunch of personal flying. Unfortunately motto was I wasn't flyin unless someone was payin. Luckily, I am able to make it to and fro airshows without additional fuel purchases. If I would like to make a personal flight, it is contingent on whether there is enough fuel left to get to next show. Sounds pretty selfish but necessary and I 4-wheel for most all of my personal trips now. Another lucky thing is the O-2 is very fuel efficient for a twin...I plan for 20 gph and often do better but at a 126 gal capacity it would be a hefty fill-up these days

As for the airshows, I think fuel costs are definitely part of the reason that we are seeing not as many being held or the reduction of number of invitations being issued by the smaller shows.

Sold my 50hp Areonca (3 gph. not quite a quart oil per hr) last year to pay a tax debt. Funny thing,I owned for near four years but the state didn't ding me until after the sale. It now resides in Hood River at the Western Aeroplane and Automobile Museum. They can claim " the most original KCA in existence" and wouldn't be lying!!

Me? I've quit flying for a while but I see an Aeronca C-2 project in my future. Moving up to 36 horses! Probably die in a hang glider when they get too expensive to operate.

A B-17, at a leaned-out cruise, will burn 200 GPH total, along with something like 8 gallons of oil.

Yikes. . .

That's a lot of oil.
We were only burning about a gallon per side in the B-25's R-2600s.

B-29 FIFI, 500 gallons for the first hour, 400 gallons for the rest of the flight.

Gen. Lyons flew his B-17 from SoCal to D.C. and back on his own dime and probably didn't even think twice about it.

My biggest complaint is that when I fill my car up they limit the purchase to $75 on my credit card so I can never fill my tank more than about 2/3 full.

I drove my Honda Civic from Seattle to the Olympia show today and it only ran me $12. I was quite pleased with that and will likely do it again tomorrow. The way i've put it is if the pilots are willing to show up and fly, the least I can do is show up and support them.

Truthfully, I saw this gas thing coming a long way down the road and that's why I never purchased a warbird... It is easyiesr and cheaper to pay for a ride and give it back... Anyway I'm building a RV-8 which is just as good but a whole cheaper but I', waiting for the Jet piston engines as 100LL will probably go away also.

Attendance at the Olympia show looked down to me (both fly-in
and drive-in attendance) but that's just a personal observation
on my part (no hard data....).

Seems like $4.25+ gallon car gas and $5.40+/gallon avgas *is* affecting
people's lives....

FWIW, I used to fly my Cessna 170B 200+ hours per year, but I am
flying my Cessna 180 less than 1/2 that now....

With any luck (and a cleaning out of the Whitehouse), the oil bubble
will burst, and folks will get some relief...
