Warbird Information Exchange

Someone mentioned that the Chicago MS&I Stuka used to reside out at Hales Corners. A story I had been told (many moons ago) was that she was moved there to be rebuilt after she was dropped from the ceiling in Chicago.

So, who has the real story (or better yet, photos) of the Stuka's final attempt at flight?

Yes, that is true. I saw it at Hales Corners during its repair. Sometime in the very early 1970s.

It was being lowered for cleaning as I recall...so anyone know what sort of height it came down from?....suppose the shocks weren't in such great condition to absorb the impact..although they did build them with strong gear.

I WAS THERE AT THE TIME WITH MY UNCLE WHO WANTED TO SHOW ME THE U-505 (HE WAS ON A DE IN THE ATLANTIC). WE LOOKED DOWN ON IT FROM THE GALLERY I'M NOT SURE HOW FAR IT DROPPED MAYBE 30-35 FEET. BTW, I'D GIVE A KIDNEY FOR THAT SPIT!!!

Both the Stuka & Spitfire MkIII hang off the main floor about 50 up.

Question is how far through the lowering process was it dropped, as they started at 50ft, a little way down at 30ft, nearing the floor at 15 ft etc.

The actual circumstance surrounding the fall are unknown to me. Sorry.
