Holy Bat Dust...another strange sage unfolding in the annul of aviation history 8) how sad that many forget that aviation is a small world and hard to get lost in

Tell us something we don't know. :D That is common knowledge in the aviation community!

I had heard that CY's people informed JR's people that the design was copyrighted but could be used for a fee, and that arrangements to repaint the plane were made before the day was over.

The story may have gained/lost detail in the telling, though.

Back to lurking;

Wow, did the good General at the Air Force Museum take lessons from Chuck Yeager or was it the other way around?

I'm waiting for the day when every single authentic combat paint scheme is copyrighted by all branches of the service or the National Museums. Just think, we could be looking forward to a day when it will cost you a copyright fee to paint your warbird in an authentic scheme. How cool would that be?

If that were to be the case then i'd love to see this scheme again.

Ah, Mr McCann's much-missed FUZ. She was indeed a beauty. Used to winter at CWH back when I worked there (23 years ago...sheesh) and I always liked how the multitude of hangar lights played across the shiny black paint when I'd walk by in the evening...Sure would be nice to see a 'stang at the Hope again.

The story behind the abrupt refinish of Mr Roush's D-model matches what I heard at Thunder one year. Good for "The Cat In The Hat" for not giving in; and anyway "Gentleman Jim" is a more interesting subject for not having been seen many times before. Did Mr Roush re-register that 51 too, BTW, since it had been "N51CY"?

YES!!! Sounds as though you fellas heard the same story I heard. I saw Gentleman Jim at Oshkosh and asked one of the people on the ground if Mr Roush had bought yet another Mustang. The gist of the conversation was the same as what you fellas are saying...that when CY told Mr Roush that he wanted part of his appearance fees, Mr Roush told CY to go pound sand :finga: :butthead: :prayer: :supz:
