I was looking at some of the aircraft types that never made it to production. In your opinion what do you think is the best aircraft that never went into production, and why?
We'll break it into two eras, 1935-1945, and 1945-1960.

B-35/B-49 and P-40Q.

Goodyear F2G Corsair, and Supermarine Spiteful for the time of propellers, and Avro Arrow, and BAC TSR2 for the jet-age.
The reasons: The first two, because they performed and looked fantastic. The second two because they were amazing aircraft in every way, and were cancelled because of political travesty... they would still be flying today quite probably if politics hadn't become involved!

For the WWII era, the Curtiss P-55. Sure it wasn't a stellar performer, but it was the shape of things to come, Starship or Long-eze anyone? For the post-war era, the North American F-108, a proposed mach 3 fighter escort for the B-70(hey theres another good postwar non-production machine) which looked much like a small XB-70

The Republic of Maine Militia and the Sunshine State Air Farce have jointly developed our fearsom Big Scone One Intercontinental Ballistic Standoff Thermo Nuclear Black Fly Scone weapon system (BSTNBFSWS) and whilst it is in production Col Rohr and Myself hope that it never has to fly. The world has enough trouble at present and we wouldn't want to have to use this.
So I guess this is sort of the weapon system you never want to see fly!!

The Dornier P.252 - worth the trouble just to see if it really would have gone 577mph! Possibly the fastest prop driven aircraft never built?

That reminds me a little of the innovative Bugatti air racer. Too bad that one never flew- it was nearly finished! I heard that someone was contemplating a flying replica, so there may someday be an answer as to how well it would have flown.

How about the Chrysler-engined XP-47H?

Hello all! I would say that the Avero Aroww would have been the one, post WWII. If it would have made production think of all the engineers going to Canada! The Arrow would have been the rock that Canadian aviation would stand on. But sadly that all fell away. Look at the Arrow and how can you not say the a few USAF jets of that time were influenced by it 
As for WWII how about the Grumman XF5F
It was fast, nimble and a forward thinking design.
I hope to talk to you all about lots of things, as for the not have beens, some good did come out of the XF5F, the F7F Tigercat! But it was to little to late. The plane is just great!

Bat. Think Bat. McDonnell P-67 Bat. I want one. I would build it. Paint it gloss black. Put a nose art having Heidi Klum in a catwoman suit on the front, and call it Miss MoonBat........Man...I've been thinking about this way too much......

Why Heidi Klum? I Know that she is a very pritty lady and all, but if you make a P-67 Bat then that should be nose art of a bombshell from the time. Mrs. Monroe, or my Pick May West. She was sexy, and very convident. What makes you so keen on the P-67 anywho?
How about the origional Spitfire development the 300 seriese? If that were to have been picked up when proposed the war might have been very different.
