yes it is infact a NACA A-17 test bed. This test if I'm not mistaken they sealed off the Radial engine all together and cooled by way of the wing mounted cooling system. 1940 Langley.

This ship was originally manufactured as an A-24A 'Dauntless'. The name 'Banshee' never truly caught on from what I understand... although I do prefer to call an Army Dauntless a Banshee.

At the time the photo was taken, I believe that this particular A-24 had already been modified as a drone and re-designated RA-24A. Later, in 1948, the 'A' designator was dropped by the USAF and the aircraft was again re-designated QF-24A, and given a new serial number... 48-044.

Both the Beech XA-38 Grizzly and the Boeing PBB-1 Sea Ranger were cancelled because the B-29 had priority and there was a shortage of R-3350's. In fact the Boeing Renton plant was built by the USN for Sea Ranger production and was traded to the USAAF for B-29 production, in return the Navy received the USAAF built North American Kansas City plant.
