This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

At the time the photo was taken, I believe that this particular A-24 had already been modified as a drone and re-designated RA-24A. Later, in 1948, the 'A' designator was dropped by the USAF and the aircraft was again re-designated QF-24A, and given a new serial number... 48-044.

Y1A-18... there were no Y1A-18As...

Ahh yes the extra "A" is a case of overzealous typing.
Yes the correct answer is "QF-24A".
..........But here is the problem I with the above statement. As you can see the picture it's dated June 1950 taken at Wright-Patt and the aircraft still wears it's original Serial Number. Not the 1948 SN 48-044 listed above.
So something's not right.

I'd agree...
Despite the hand-written date, it may be possible that the photo was not taken in 1950. Also, does anyone else think that the ground looks to be snow-covered? If this is the case, then the photo was certainly not taken in June, as stated, unless there was a freak snowfall during the summer.
The reference to the new serial number was found
HERE, on Joe Baugher's site. Joe is usually spot-on, although I've found errors in his writings before, so it's possible that his information is incorrect, although I find it unlikely.
It's also possible that the 'new' serial number was never actually applied to the aircraft, although I find that to be unlikely as well.
