It's cool in another way too, to my newbie trainee A&P wannabe self, that engine ain't tuned or built for sh1t, bad cylinders, or bad mags, or timed wrong, or,or,,,,the list is endless, thank jeebus that ain't in an airplane. It needs a club too, or what little it does do, ain't going to do it for long.

It is pretty cool though. Those cats need to stand farther away though....seriously

I think a good deal of his problem is lack of rotating mass- he has not got the weight of the propeller spinning there! With no prop, he hasn't got all that extra rotating mass, which will keep the engine spinning forward/around, thus once it starts turning, nothing is keeping it turning other than the starter- usually the turning prop adds a bit from the weight of it spinning.

I think you guys know what I mean- or is the theory completely off? You know how a radial, once switched off, will usually turn a few times just from the weight of the blades going around... Newtons first law? A body in motion...

Yeah flywheel effect would help, but you have to remember even that is going through gearing and that really isn't a good thing for a flywheel, and at low rpm it probably hinders some too because of gearing backlash.
Well if you watch the long version where he runs it at the meeting, he is priming with what looks like a bottle down the carburetor. And obviously the throttle is barely open, the problem is lack of prime, its a long ways down those intake manifolds, and hardly enough gas too boot.
I guess he's standing so far off because of fear of an induction explosion, has there ever been a case of that? If so all single engine radial aircraft would be prime candidates for the same.

He is obviously not concerned about wrecking it. First time I saw it I was wondering if it even had oil supply.
Yeah it need a prop for some cooling too.

I took the photo.

To get a bit of press/TV interest going, leading up to AirWar74 at Windsor, Ontario, 'Connie' Edwards choreographed the streak, whilst I briefed the press for a potential interest story if they stood just 'here'.

The streaker dived in to a taxiing TBM, hotly pursued by the Ontario Provincial Police. Connie took off and returned in all innocence some 20 minutes later with no passengers and professed total ignorance of the whole affair.

As part of the build up they also gathered up about six fighters and a T-33 and flew down the 'Main Street' of some small township in the catchment area at significantly less than 500'.

Here is a shot of the T-33 on the return and you can see the other aircraft in the background.

These days those sort things are more frowned on.

You don't have to name names, but was it one of the groundcrew from Connie's camp?

I think he was one of Don Plumb's or a local home base crew, at Windsor.

For sure, a bet, money or both were involved.
