P-51D Color Me Gone

Thu Jul 31, 2008 10:40 pm

As a kid one of my favorite mustangs was "Color Me Gone". It crashed some time back and was rebuilt as something else. Anyone have any pictures of this? Somewhere I have one, but it's a really poor 110 shot from a distance.

I still remember the "after" picture of this airplane that appeared in Air Classics. That must have been some wild ride!

Thanks for the photos guys. That is a beautiful airplane. It made it to Harlingen a number of times back in the good ole days.

I remember this P-51 flying in to the Reading Airshow, PA back in the mid 70's It was there for just a while with 3 others, then left. I think I have a slide of it somewhere in my collection.

N117E crashed in feb. 78 in MS. Aircraft pretty demolished in that accident. There is a b&w photo in Air Classics of the 51 lying on the ground shortly after it happened, but unfortunately I don't have that issue.

I've always liked the colors of that P-51. Great to see photos of it.

I was 17 at the time "Color Me Gone" was at the Kissimee air show outside of Orlando. They flew most of the aircraft that were in the show over to Orlando's Herndon field at night. I took some pictures of all the planes at the air show parked at Herdon with the camera set on a tripod and left the shutter open for about 40 seconds. I got some awesome shots of "Color Me Gone". The rumor that floated around the air field about the crash was that the machanic that worked for Scott Smith had worked on the engine of Color Me Gone. After the crash there were some questions as to his qualifications and Scott Smiths P51 afterwards came up for sale. The crash happened after the airshow at Kissimmee. I noticed that someone listed Scott Smith as an owner of Color Me Gone. I didn't know he had bought it. He also had another P51 with a large "S" painted on the tail.

If I should happen to find those pic's I'll post them.

I remember hanging around Herdon airfield when I was 17-18. I would wash airplanes, AT-6, Stearman and a few others just for a ride. The interesting thing at Herndon at that time was 24 Sea Fury's. They belonged to Dave Tellachet (I know I spelled it wrong). There were 2 that were trainers and 2 were still in their factory crates. Never assembled! Zero hours on the engines. They were placed in crates to be shipped overseas.
