I saw this photo online (posted by "edgardo") of abandoned trains near Baquedano, Chile. I thought it was kind of cool looking and couldn't help wishing that they were abandoned PLANES instead. Apparently, Basquedano is in the Atacama desert, meaning that it is not only remote, but also one of the driest places on earth (which has to be good for preservation).

Looks like steam trains operated at least into the late 1990s in Chile.

Attributed to Marcelo Madariaga in 1998...

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.

S: Took hammer away from midget.

My thoughts exactly. Same gauge and everything. Only trick is finding a barge to get it to Lorenzo Cardenas and then up the KCSM and KCS into Dallas. :)
